I just read the new Haaretz article about how Israeli planted pines are suddenly dying en masse and it is absolutely worth dissecting. Here are a summary & my observations as a Palestinian scholar who writes on green colonialism. 1/ Image
Israel boasts about having planted 250 million trees since its founding. 90% of those trees are not Indigenous. About 50% of the planted trees are "Aleppo pines" that originated in the south of Europe (mainly Spain) & North Africa. The article doesn't note they're invasive. 2/ Image
Israel planted monocultures of these pines over the ruins of Palestinian villages to hide their existence, prevent Palestinians from returning, assert claim over the land, & greenwash its state image. I describe this weaponization of tree planting as green colonialism. 3/
The article shows pictures of pines dying in the Forest of the Martyrs from last month. Israel planted 6 million trees there to symbolize the 6 million Jews who were killed by the Nazis. What the author doesn't state, however, was they were planted over 5 Palestinian villages. 4/ Image
Image
Israel expelled hundreds of inhabitants from the 5 🇵🇸 villages of Dayr 'Amr, Khirbat al-'Umur, Kasla, Bayt Umm al-Mays, & 'Aqqur before destroying them & planting the forest in 1951. Every pile of stones was a home. Here is are pictures of 'Aqqur from 2023 with graying trees. 6/ Image

Israel chose these pines since they grew quickly & Europeanized the land. Zionists also claimed these trees dominated 🇵🇸 when it fell under the control of the ancient Hebrews. However, the pines died quickly due to their flammability and susceptibility to pests & droughts. 4/
The Haaretz article reveals Israeli pines are now turning grey, completely drying up, & dying in the region around Jerusalem and even further in an-Naqab (the south of Historic Palestine), particularly Sansana Forest, Lahav Forest, and Yatir Forest, largely due to drought. 5/
Unrecognized Bedouin 🇵🇸 villages have also been destroyed to make way for the plantation of Israeli man-made forests in an-Naqab. Instead of "making the desert bloom," afforestation has been desertifying the region & increasing local temperatures due to high water consumption. 6/
Israeli pine monocultures have also been called "pine deserts," even by Israeli researchers, since they shed needles that acidified the land & eroded biodiversity, weakening the health of local ecosystems and making them more susceptible to disease. 7/
The article theorizes that the large fire that erupted last year in April near Jerusalem also contributed to the death of 1 million pines since it radiated heat & allowed pests to travel more easily. With the drying of pines & climate change, the situation is only worsening. 8/
My two main takeaways from this article are that 1) we are witnessing what may be called a land intifada. For decades, Israeli-planted pines couldn't adapt to the land & now they're collectively dying. The oaks, olives, oranges, & figs; the black goats & camels are returning. 9/
The ruins of the homes Israel desperately tried to conceal are revealed once more. And their original owners are able to return, rebuild their societies, grow trees that actually bear fruit, and tend to their lands in a sustainable manner. 10/
2) The Jewish National Fund (JNF) which is both the afforestation wing of the Israeli state & its precursor, is finally admitting that its project of "making the desert bloom" was a massive failure. That the desert landscape will return to an-Naqab. So will the Native flora. 10/
JNF chief forester is cited in the article stating, nationwide, "it will be a more open forest, less dense, more diverse forest, with more broad-leafed trees & fewer pines. This is the reality & it will happen without us." Decolonization is inevitable. 11/
It's not just about invasive species & climate change. Israel's genocide has caused severe pollution. Its displacement of Natives who developed ecological knowledge over millennia & extermination of nonhumans like black goats it deemed destructive also deteriorated the land. 12/
Similarly on Turtle Island, we see how the displacement of Natives, suppression of their fire practices, & plantation of Australian eucalyptus trees fueled fires. It is only through the return of lands to Indigenous peoples worldwide & abolition of capitalism the earth can heal.
I'm sorry I totally messed up the numbers of the tweets lol this was a long thread

If you're not on Instagram, you may not know that a large smear campaign has been launched by mainly anonymous "pro-Palestinian" accounts against the Global Sumud Flotilla and amplified by Zionist media. A thread on the flotilla, co-option, and narcissism in activist spaces. 1/
First, let's revisit the history of the flotilla movement & remind all human rights supporters of its significance. Both the settler colony of Israel & puppet state of Egypt imposed a siege & naval blockade on Gaza since 2007 that made it "unliveable" according to the UN. 2/
Since 2008, ships have been regularly attempting to break the blockade and end "international complicity in the genocide commited by Israel in Gaza," in the words of current flotilla spokesperson Pablo Castilla. 3/

Ten years ago, my aunt went to renew her passport in Canada, where she was told she couldn't list "Palestine" as her place of birth. The only other options they gave her were "West Bank," "Israel," & "Jordan." She refused to pick from them so the employee called their managers.1/
It became a huge ordeal but they ultimately agreed that my aunt could write "Bethlehem" as her place of birth without mentioning a country. She left the center feeling devastated but she succeeded in holding onto her homeland, expressing her steadfastness & dignity. 2/
My aunt refused to accept the fragmentation of her homeland by writing "West Bank" or recognize its colonization, occupation, & annexation by either Israel or Jordan. She placed blame for the denial of her identity squarely on Canadian colonial authorities. 3/

In response to my argument that we shouldn't manufacture consent for imperialism, some folks countered that the US doesn't need consent. This is an ahistorical, illogical, & reactionary argument. At its core is the popular belief that people are powerless. 1/7
States have consistently manufactured consent for their actions, seeking internal & external legitimacy to ensure their survival. For instance, Indigenous peoples have been portrayed as non-Christian "savages" to alleviate White guilt around the continual theft of their lands. 2/
The US esp seeks to secure the consent of its citizens to brand itself as a global champion of democracy, thereby attracting & retaining settlers. Otherwise, as we see now in the "US," protests erupt, threatening the dismantlement of not just the regime but the entire colony. 3/

"Why can't you condemn both the Iranian regime & Western intervention?" It's for the same reason we as Palestinians refrain from critiquing authorities in Gaza. It's not bc they're perfect — as if anywhere lacks political discontent — but bc we're facing a colonial genocide. 1/
Our social, environmental, & economic woes can all be traced to the founding of the Israeli settler colony in 1948, the regime that displaced, massacred, kidnapped, raped, & tortured our people en masse, uprooted our trees, destroyed our homes, & undermined secularism. 2/
It makes sense to target the root of our oppression, Zionism. Furthermore, any critique made by Gazans against local authorities will be quickly weaponized by Zionists to prove the inability of Palestinians to self-govern — a racist colonial view — greenlighting more genocide. 3/

The day of my graduation was such a bittersweet day. On the one hand, I finally received my PhD in International Relations — with my research on Israeli green colonialism — in the presence of my loved ones, cherished colleagues, & former students. 1/6 Image
It was no small feat to obtain this degree in the social sciences as one of only two people to do so in my extended family. Further, I had to grapple with a genocide against my community, and was a leading activist for the rights of various communities on & off campus. 2/ Image
On the other hand, I had to sit through a 2-hour ceremony filled with hypocrisy where most of the university decisionmakers were White. Yet, those who were honoured were Black, Indigenous, People of Colour. The Zionist institution performed its commitment to racial justice. 3/

I am happy to share that my dissertation on Israeli green colonialism has been published. It accomplishes four major goals: 1) I theorize settler colonialism as a process that is inherently genocidal and ecocidal.
macsphere.mcmaster.ca/handle/11375/3…Image
2) I identify Western environmentalism, Zionism, & Orientalism as foundations of Israeli green colonialism or the weaponization of environmentalism to colonize our land. For example, I investigate the Israeli adoption of hiking as a tool of conquest. 2/
3) I reconstruct the past & future of 🇵🇸 villages, which were often destroyed & covered with European pines by Israel, as by transcribing & translating interviews with Nakba survivors.
4) I explore the resistance of Palestinians & their nonhuman kin to green colonialism. 3/
