Republicans are once again pushing for the United States to leave NATO.

The case they make is built on misinformation, bad logic, and a misunderstanding of how the alliance actually works.

Leaving NATO would not make America stronger or richer. It would weaken American power, reduce our influence, and make the world more dangerous in ways that would ultimately find their way to our shores.
🧵
The new grievance from some conservatives is that NATO countries did not join the United States in its war against Iran. But NATO is a defensive alliance. Its core principle is Article 5: an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all. That clause has been invoked exactly one time in NATO’s history, after the United States was attacked on 9/11.

NATO nations do not have an obligation to join fellow members in wars they start, such as when the US and Israel launched a bombing campaign against Iran at the end of February.

In past conflicts, NATO members have sometimes joined the United States through separate coalitions and prior coordination outside of the alliance. Trump did not coordinate with, or even inform, other NATO nations about the attack against Iran beforehand.

This war also followed recently after the US had threatened to invade and take over Greenland, which is a territory of Denmark, a fellow NATO ally.
Another false narrative is that the United States has paid trillions of dollars to NATO while other countries freeload. That is false.

The “trillions” people cite are really total U.S. defense spending, which is fully separate from NATO’s common budgets. NATO’s common-funded budgets are much smaller, up to about $6.2 billion for 2026.

Under NATO’s current cost-share formula, the United States and Germany each pay 15% of those common budgets. In other words, America and Germany pay the same share toward NATO, even though the U.S. economy is six times larger than Germany’s. That alone tells you America’s burden is not what critics claim.

Anti-NATO arguments take U.S. military spending, pretend it is money handed over to NATO, and then claim America is being robbed. But if the United States left NATO tomorrow, that would not eliminate the U.S. defense budget. America would still maintain its military and, based on the budget requests coming out of DC, would continue massively increasing that spending.

Leaving NATO wouldn’t save America money. It would leave the United States with the same massive military costs and fewer allies helping extend American power.
The last misleading point concerns defense spending as a share of GDP. NATO has long had a guideline that members should spend at least 2% of GDP on defense, but it is a guideline, not a legally binding requirement for dues payments.

Even so, all NATO members met or exceeded that 2% benchmark in 2025. At the top was Poland at 4.48% of GDP. The United States ranked seventh at 3.22%. NATO’s new target is 5% by 2035. Some nations are almost at that spending level, but not the US, leaving little room for complaining.

With the misinformation cleared up, let’s discuss the ways NATO benefits the United States.
First, NATO multiplies American power. The U.S. does not have to maintain global leadership alone because it works through an alliance of 32 countries, sharing planning, infrastructure, logistics, and intelligence. American power extends farther because of allied bases, militaries, and coordination.

NATO also helps create a much broader intelligence picture through consultations, intelligence-sharing, and joint threat assessment. That makes the U.S. stronger than it would be on its own.
Second, NATO lowers the cost of American world leadership. The alliance allows the United States to share burdens with other wealthy democracies rather than trying to deter threats on its own. European allies and Canada have increased defense spending sharply in recent years.

NATO says its combined defense spending reached more than $574 billion in 2025, and the U.S. share of total alliance defense spending has fallen as other members have increased theirs. That is what burden-sharing looks like.
Third, NATO has real economic value. The alliance has preserved a stable Europe, and stable allies make better trade partners and better places for investment than a continent shaped by insecurity and conflict.

Allied defense spending also feeds back into the United States. SIPRI found that 58% of major arms imports by NATO’s European members in 2021–2025 came from the United States. NATO is not a weapons sales program, but allied military spending often supports the American industrial base.
Fourth, NATO helps prevent the kind of major war that the United States would get dragged into. That is one of the alliance’s core purposes. NATO was created not only to deter outside threats but also to help prevent renewed instability and militarism in Europe.

That stability has been one of the great strategic bargains in modern history. It gave the United States a more secure Atlantic world, more reliable allies, and a much stronger position from which to project influence globally.
Fifth, NATO makes American diplomacy more effective. Sanctions, coordinated pressure, and deterrence carry more weight when they are backed by a bloc of major allies rather than by Washington acting alone. It is one reason adversaries like Russia benefit when Americans start talking themselves into abandoning the alliance.
Contrary to the complaints, US involvement in NATO is not charity requiring other nations to be beholden to everything we demand of them. It is one of the clearest examples of the United States gaining more from an alliance than it pays into it.

America gets greater military reach, extensive intelligence networks, stronger trade relationships, decisive diplomacy, and a stable, prosperous Europe. In return, it pays a modest share of NATO’s common budgets while maintaining a defense budget it would keep without the alliance.
If the United States left NATO, it would be an unforced error. America would lose influence, creating an opening for Russia and China to expand theirs.

The United States became the leader of the Western world not by isolating itself, but by building institutions and alliances that amplified its strength. Abandoning NATO would mean giving away one of America’s greatest strategic advantages.

Trump’s approach to politics is to demand unwavering loyalty from all members of the Republican Party. Anyone who steps out of line is publicly berated and painted as a target for his followers to harass. If they don’t fall back in line, Trump supports a primary candidate who is more loyal, more submissive.

That strategy is played out.

Trump attempted to push one of his most loyal members to remove her name from the discharge petition for a vote on releasing the Epstein files. Lauren Boebert ran her campaign on being faithful to Trump and being a trusted vote for his agenda in Congress, but this time, she wouldn’t budge.

Now that the threshold has been reached and the vote is scheduled, dozens, possibly even a hundred, additional Republicans will vote to release the files. They fear the public backlash of voting no more than they fear Trump’s outrage from voting yes.

The tide has changed. Instead of being the coattails Republicans ride on, Trump has become the anchor that drags them down. His public attacks are no longer damaging to a campaign. They are a benefit.

Look no further than Marjorie Taylor Greene.Image
Marjorie Taylor Greene hasn’t changed. She isn’t suddenly enlightened about the struggles that working-class Americans face. Conspiracies, lies, bigotry, and Christian Nationalism are still core to her platform. But she understands that the fake culture war no longer works when your party controls the entire federal government. The people who voted for you expect you to deliver on the grand promises that were made.

Trump never intended to deliver on those promises; instead, he sought to enrich himself and use his power to avoid accountability. Republican voters are realizing this. Trump’s approval rating has sunk to new lows. Two-thirds of the country disapproves of his job performance on the economy, the most critical issue for voters.

The most recent election saw not only Democratic wins across the country, but also Trump’s strongholds shifting to the left.Image
When your party is in power and life is getting worse, and there is no plan to make it better, the best strategy becomes complaining about the party leadership. It is a way of continuing to play the role of an outsider even while in the majority. Slowly, bit by bit, congressional Republicans are following this path.

Trump is trying to regain ground. He is reducing his tariffs on coffee, bananas, beef, and cocoa as high prices have reduced consumer sentiment to match the record low seen during the peak of post-pandemic high inflation.Image

The US economy, once the envy of the world, quickly ground to a halt in a matter of months after Trump took office. It was a predictable outcome, as economists and experts had warned that enacting broad tariffs would lead to job losses and increased inflation.

What is shocking is that, according to 2024 exit polls, the top issue for Trump voters was the economy.

There is nothing about Trump's history that suggests he understands economics. His wealth, aside from the crypto bribes and money he earned from selling subpar, often tacky, products to his supporters, was inherited. Trump's list of failed businesses fills an entire page, and he was convicted of falsifying business records 34 times. His last presidency was marked by the decline of manufacturing in the US, a loss of total jobs, growing income inequality, and rapidly rising debt.

So why did so many people vote for Trump if they wanted a better economy? They've been repeatedly lied to.
🧵
Fox News and other rightwing media said that global high inflation was due to Biden instead of the pandemic. When inflation dropped to normal levels faster than our peer nations, the lie was that it was still high. As GDP growth was robust, Fox said the economy was slowing. And while the debt-to-GDP ratio was shrinking, they said it was rising out of control.

The Biden administration didn’t just tackle inflation and the debt; America experienced the longest stretch of low unemployment in over 50 years, high-tech manufacturing jobs came back to the US, and Biden is the only president in history to have added jobs every month of his presidency. No administration is without its flaws, but the economy was not one of Biden’s.

In June 2024, the World Bank wrote:

“There are, of course, notable bright spots in the global economy. The U.S. economy, in particular, has shown impressive resilience. Growth has remained buoyant in the teeth of the fiercest monetary policy tightening in four decades. U.S. dynamism, in fact, is one reason the global economy enjoys some upside potential over the next two years.”

Ayhan Kose, the World Bank’s deputy chief economist, said at the time that “US growth is exceptional.”
By the time the election rolled around, inflation had returned to normal ranges, wages had been outpacing inflation for years, and the lowest earners had seen the largest gains. However, millions of Americans hadn’t adjusted to the higher prices that had become the new normal during the pandemic recovery.

There was also continuous doomsaying from media outlets and podcasters, such as Joe Rogan, about the best economic situation we could hope for, following a pandemic that shut down the world. Millions of Americans became convinced that the strong economy was a disaster in desperate need of rescue.

Enter Trump, who, with the help of Fox News and right-wing podcasters, created a revisionist history of his first presidency and made impossible promises on how he would make America rich. They invented a problem and then claimed to have the solution.

The United States is governed by the interests of a small number of wealthy elites. That isn’t what our Republic, founded as a government of the people, by the people, for the people, was ever meant to be.

A revolution was fought to eliminate the ruling class and empower the many. It's time to fight our way back there, and it will take a united effort to succeed.

Workers deserve better.🧵
America has evolved into a society that worships CEOs. The more billions they make, the more attention, respect, and power they obtain. Their wealth has ballooned to such an extent that they’re buying media companies, creating their own space programs, renting out Venice for their weddings, even influencing presidential elections and buying government positions.

A unique mythos is formed around each billionaire, telling the tale of how all their success was due to their personal control over every aspect of the business, down to the last screw. A fiction so well crafted that as we dread how we’re going to pay the rent next month or fill the empty fridge with a maxed out credit card, we still marvel at their yachts that are so big they need another smaller yacht to be able to go on excursions to their private islands where they hang their original Victorian era works of art.

It is time to destroy the myth of the self-made man.
Jeff Bezos had a good idea about setting up an online store to get goods to customers in the digital age, but he didn’t create the internet; the government did, using your tax dollars. He also didn’t create America’s infrastructure or roads and railways; again, taxpayers funded that. And Bezos doesn’t stock the warehouses, fill the orders, ship the products, or manage customer service; millions of workers do. Amazon wouldn’t be possible or successful without all of those things.

Bezos deserves to be rich for building a successful company, but not with a total compensation that is 1,200,000 times that of the median Amazon worker. His compensation is so high that he earns the entire lifetime salary of the average American worker in just 13 minutes. That’s a problem.

Thugs in unmarked tactical gear, aiming guns as they shout at everyone to get against the wall, manhandling anyone who doesn’t comply fast enough—no badges shown. No warrants. Masks and sunglasses cover their faces. People are shoved into vans or SUVs. Some aren’t seen for weeks. Some never again.

This isn’t Russia, or North Korea, nor is it a dystopian novel. This is America.🧵Image
Those here legally are finding their visas are suddenly and secretly revoked.

-They’re detained for writing articles that call out the suffering happening in Gaza.
-They’re nabbed exiting their immigration hearing, punished for doing things the right way—the way Republicans have always demanded that immigrants come to America.
-Worksites are raided to fill quotas despite the campaign promise to round up all of the hardened criminals they claimed filled our country from the invasion at the southern border.
Why the quotas? When you spend years fearmongering about the ruthless, violent criminals flooding into the country and campaign on rounding up those monsters to save America, you need to make it look like you’re solving the problem you invented. That’s why you make a Hollywood production out of flying shackled men to South America and bussing them into one of the most notorious prisons in the world.

When it is revealed that you sent people who had zero criminal convictions, you spend more energy fabricating evidence and attacking their character than it would take to follow the court order to get them released. The image of ridding America of violent gang members is more important than upholding due process and constitutional rights.

Prominent conservative pundits are increasing their criticism of Trump’s leadership. Republican politicians are getting booed at their town halls because they voted for the terrible “big beautiful bill” and, even worse, without even reading it first. Wall Street is referring to tariffs as TACO - Trump Always Chickens Out. Major MAGA influencers who became popular by peddling conspiracies and disinformation are bluntly saying that the GOP lied to them. “We were played.”

The rest of the country is either angry that they're stuck dealing with the corruption and ineptitude that is unwinding America’s greatness, progress, and our rights, or have simply given up, tuned out, and see voting as pointless.

Everyone is frustrated. But is it enough to spark change?

Not unless we, the people, force it to change.🧵
Republicans are going to continue to lie and promote conspiracies because their agenda is to take from the working and middle class to funnel the money to their wealthy and corporate sponsors that keep them in power. It is an unpopular stance that requires fear-mongering and lies to gain control.

Those who say they care about the national debt continue to think Republicans are better with the economy, despite the debt coming from Republican presidents and growing faster now that Trump is back in office. The roaring economy switched to a shrinking GDP, and a recession may follow.
Most astounding of all is that Democrats, who should be winning elections and majorities with ease against extremist MAGA candidates, lost and learned nothing from it.

Democrats didn’t lose in 2024 because the country flocked to Trump. They failed because Democratic voters gave up and stayed home. The Democratic presidential candidate received 7% fewer votes than in the previous election. The corporate-backed, timid messaging of the DNC didn’t connect with the millions of hard-working Americans struggling to get by.

You don’t reconnect with working-class Americans by regurgitating the talking points of a multi-millionaire who writes for the New York Times and the Washington Post and founded his own major media company. You connect with working-class Americans by listening to them and joining them in protests and picket lines.

Donald Trump woke up this morning and demanded, through social media posts, that Apple move all manufacturing to the US or face a 25% tariff and recommended 50% tariffs on the EU. It isn’t clear who he recommended this to, since he has been randomly applying tariffs whenever he feels like it.

Stock markets still hadn’t recovered and took another dive after the announcement. But that may be the least troubling sign for America’s economy. Here are others:🧵
The stock markets get most of the attention because the bond market is not something most Americans are familiar with and is typically quiet, calm, and slow-moving. This past Wednesday's 20-year treasury bond auction was a disaster, with unusually low demand driving yields excessively high.

This came on the heels of Republicans signalling they would pass the “big beautiful bill,” which would explode the US debt and hurt the overall economy. The House passed that bill on Thursday morning.

Moody’s also downgraded America’s credit rating for the first time in history, citing the country’s climbing debt and Republicans' unwillingness to address it.
Trump has increased economic uncertainty by continuing to change his position on tariffs, as he did again today. He attacked Walmart for announcing price increases due to tariffs and shamed Amazon for considering showing what part of the price at checkout was from tariffs.

Trump seems to think every company and foreign country would “eat the tariffs” because he told them to. He is frustrated that everything about his tariff plan has failed, causing him to lash out and make the situation worse instead of admitting it was a mistake and backing off.
