Hi, I’ll be live-tweeting today’s Fatal Crash Review Team meeting starting at 2:00 p.m. for #indydocumenters @indydocumenters @mirrorindy.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Meeting began at 2:02 p.m. with approval of minutes.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The minutes from the March 20 meeting was approved.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy You can find more information about the Fatal Crash Review Team here: .indy.gov/activity/compl…
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The Department of Public Works representative and a member of the review team were not seeing eye to eye about how recommendations are being handled.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The citizen members of the team seem to disagree with what Jill Palmer, the DPW representative of the team should be recommending.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Next they reviewed the first fatal crash.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The first crash being reviewed happened at W. 10th St. and N. Bauman, where a pedestrian was struck by a car.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The location of the crash is very close to Ben Davis High School, meaning there is very heavy traffic in the area.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy As a parent of someone who attended Ben Davis, I myself have been stuck in that traffic on many occasions!
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Recommendations for this crash include installing more crosswalks.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Another recommendation is consolidated bus stops with improved lighting.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The second crash to be reviewed happened on New Years Day on 79th near Walnut Dr. where one car was driving left of center and was involved in a head on collision with another vehicle.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy There was alcohol involved in this crash.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Recommendations for the second crash review include having more sobriety checkpoints, as well as reviewing speed limits in the area.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The third crash being reviewed happened on January 12th at E. 39th and Richardt and involved a car driving into a retention pond.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Evidently this was not the only incident where a car had wound up in that particular retention pond.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy There was 2 children in the car that were saved but the driver, Mr. Sims, perished.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The recommendations for this crash included a sign indicating which way Richardt goes, a sign indicating there is a retention pond up ahead, improved lighting in the area or a physical barrier.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The next crash to be reviewed happened at 34th St. and Dandy Trail. Alcohol was involved and the car was travelling at 71 mph in a 35 mph zone. The driver of the car struck a guardrail.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Recommendations for this crash included finding a way to slow people down (i.e. bumpy road, speed hump), repair or replace the broken guardrail at the intersection.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Correction: the car struck a snowplow truck, not a guardrail.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The next crash happened at Shadeland and Twin Oaks Dr. and involved a hit and run.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Recommendations include more sidewalks and crosswalks in general, improved lighting in the area, adding pedestrian wait areas for crossing the street.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The team took a 5 minute recess, and they are now reviewing the next crash, which took place near Shadeland as well (as the last crash reviewed), on Picton Dr.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy This crash happened on Feb. 7th. The crash was actually on Shadeland, near Picton Dr. (North of Pendleton Pike). A woman was hit by 2 vehicles. It was dark and there were mounds of snow everywhere from snowplows cleaning up after a snow storm.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Recommendations for this crash include snow plowing protocols be reviewed, increasing walkability on sidewalks after snow being plowed, improved lighting in the area
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Next crash was at E. Washington St. and Oriental and involved speeding in a construction zone, where the driver veered into an excavator.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Recommendations include checking to see if the the cones and or barrels had reflective tape and were clearly visible.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The next crash reviewed took place at Massachusetts Ave. and Newman and involved a Jeep and a Chevrolet SUVs resulting in one of the vehicles striking a utility pole.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Recommendations for this crash include more clear signage being posted.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The next incident reviewed was at Harlan and Fletcher and involved a car crashing into a pole.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Evidently this was the 2nd fatality resulting in this pole being at the end of the street, (Harlan jogs where it crosses Fletcher).
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Recommendations include asking AES (Applied Energy Services) to relocate the utility pole.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The next incident reviewed happened at S. Arlington Ave. near Edgewood Ave. where a pickup truck veered off the road and collided with a tree.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Recommendations were to evaluate if the tree should be removed or a lower posted speed limit.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy The last crash reviewed happened on N. Post Road near E. 38th St. and involved a pedestrian crossing the road and being hit by a bus.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Investigators reported the person ran into the side of the bus mid-block and outside of a crosswalk.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Recommendations included improving the lighting on the connecting bus stop.
@indydocumenters @mirrorindy Meeting adjourned at 5:39 p.m. This concludes the Fatal Crash Review Team meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for July 21st. For more meeting coverage, check out .documenters.org
