This is something that many left of center people do because they just don't know any soldiers. Soldiers are normal people and most of them are completely fine. Via his own stories his worst day in Iraq was when his unit got hit by a few mortars with no casualties
It's yet another form of noble savaging that educated, overwhelmingly white, mid to high income liberals/leftists do. Whether its the poor or the Noble Workers or Food Desert Minorities or broken veterans
Most veterans leave the service happy they did it, happy to be out, and their biggest complaint is that their knees and back are fucked up from running around with heavy packs all the time

A big part of the reason people left of center are so angry about platner is the rank hypocrisy the left is peddling

They have spent the last decade calling anybody associated with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars war criminals, genocidal murderers
To give an example, Pete Buttigieg spent 6 months in a trailer on Bagram air base tracking Taliban finances via spreadsheet. Self-admitted that he almost never left the wire

All the leftist podcasters, influencers, etc called him a war criminal for doing that
then along comes platner. did multiple tours in Iraq, including literally at Abu Ghraib. Went back to work for Blackwater successor Constellis. Bragged about killing, posted favorably about desecrating dead bodies

And suddenly the war criminal accusations from the left are gone!

thread on the platner reddit comments that weren't revealed until now

1. He is very clearly an alcoholic

2. he very obviously knew exactly what his tattoo was and it's insulting to deny that

3. Mills was too genteel to use this stuff in her campaign, collins won't be
4. A lot of this is fratboy stuff posted by a guy who was in his mid 30s for most of it

5. how fucking stupid is this guy and his consultants that they not only didn't delete this reddit account, but had a link to it on his campaign twitter account!
collins is going to win this election. platner is such a shit candidate that he has scandals that will piss off multiple *diametrically opposed* parts of the electorate

tattoo, gun stuff, slurs, rape comments will depress normie suburbanites, who collins is very strong with

A plurality of Americans think that Saudi Arabia did 9/11 and they remain a US ally

For all of its negative PR, the Israeli military and intelligence apparatus is enormously competent. Depending on how you view France, it’s the 3rd or 4th strongest global military
Plus Israel’s immunity from domestic politics constraining military action is very valuable to the US

If the US wants somebody dead and doesn’t feel that that we can justify it politically, the Israelis can do it for us
Oh and the US and Israeli militaries over the past 3 years probably have the closest relationship on the planet, nobody had conducted military operations more hand in glove

Allentown posting is very revealing at how disconnected people who talk about trade/industry are from the actual world

Allentown and Bethlehem are doing *great* today! Both are thriving eds/meds/tourism towns. The entire Lehigh Valley is a bedroom community and shipping hub Image
Unlike many of America's great industrial cities, both cities quickly recovered and are at their all time population highs. The Lehigh Valley has seen double digit population growth over the past 20 years, with the foundation of that growth *the modern economy*
The big lynchpin employers are local hospitals and universities. Students and researchers, many of them from overseas, come to inland Pennsylvania to study, learn, research, and teach. Many stay if given the option

IMO American organized labor is sleepwalking into a crisis

There are three big trends happening for labor:

1. Union members are becoming ever more right wing
2. Labor boosters/organizers are becoming ever more left wing
3. Labor leaders are unwilling to tell their members no
Union households still narrowly vote for Democrats, but it's almost even now, and will flip very soon

Meanwhile, the energy on labor's side is focused on progressive coded organizing - coffee shops and grad students (did you know that 1/3 of the UAW's members are grad students)
The people getting into labor organizing today are likely to be progressives or even outright socialists, meanwhile union members are increasingly strong trump supporters

How do you maintain that coalition?

@agraybee you know the whole "well regulated militia" part of the 2a? that's because when the constitution was written, the entire American military consisted of state militias. These weren't dudes cosplaying soldier in the woods, they were organized military regiments under state govts
@agraybee There was an organized state militia, with a state militia commander, and local units that drilled and trained regularly under their own officers. States maintained private armories of guns, powder, and artillery to outfit these state militias
@agraybee These state militia sucked - the reason the US doesn't own Canada today is that these militias were pathetically bad and got whupped by the British. The death knell of the state militias was the Civil War. The initial fighting of the war was northern militias vs southern militias
