Clark's diaries really illuminate how right-wing the Thatcher government was. Francis Maude vetoes Lawson becoming foreign secretary because Lawson was Jewish / Clark takes offense at Italians celebrating anti-Fascism / Clark quotes Hitler and affectionately calls him "Wolf."
Re-arranged his office to be "Mussolini-like" / a Jewish journalist pushes him on what a "nation state" is, and Clark replies "if you don't know what the nation state is, you're decadent" / Clark says that trying to fight black crime with law is like "limiting sex by decree."
Other than that, a quite timeless observation on the psychology of the Lib Dems and their voters. There's also a striking afterthought for his father's funeral. "Myself, I don't want one [a funeral]. Better to just disappear, like Zapata."
