The presenters have concluded the presentation on the Chicago Park District’s teen engagement initiatives in their Teens in the Park program.
The meeting has moved into the next portion of the meeting where General Superintendent Carlos Ramirez-Rosa give their updates. The update includes the openings of the beaches and pools for the summer, onboarding of new hires for lifeguards, summer day camp opportunities, etc.
Ramirez-Rosa also mentions the upcoming plans for the Nights in the Parks series and how Chicago has returned to the top 10 in 2026 ParkScore index.
The updates from the General Superintendent has concluded, and the time for public speaking has began. The first speaker wants to address the issue with the naming of a park.
The second speaker has finished with his remarks about keeping the parks safe for all and calls for the Commission to interfere with the Chicago Police Department’s efforts. The third speaker wants the Commission to keep The Point and not to expel teens or others from The Point.
Ramirez-Rosa encourages these speakers to speak with the Office of Prevention and Accountability for concerns of this nature.
The fourth speaker thanks the Commission for taking the time to speak with them and ask for a shared request to reinstate the summer water aerobics class for the seniors in Washington Park.
The fifth speaker speaks on the behalf of Ethos and speaks about their concern the Chicago Park District’s installation barrier that has blocked the enjoyment of the South Shore Park. The sixth speaker has finished their comments.
The seventh speaker wants to address public safety concerns as the Juneteenth and the Fourth of July approaches about resident safety from fireworks and asks for a proactive strategy in place for the holidays.
The eighth speaker has began to play “A Whole New World” from Aladdin on their saxophone.
A short clip of the performance can be found here!:
The ninth speaker has finished their comment, and the last speakers for today’s public comment period are making their comments.
The tenth speaker has finished their comment, and the 11th speaker is next and has requested for the Chicago Park District to address the need of revenue parking.
The 12th speaker speaks about the issues about the encampments at Eugene Field, and the issues that community members have been facing since then and requests for the illegal activities around the encampments to be addressed.
The 13th speaker wants to address the two judiciary responsibilities at Eugene Park and notes the damage Eugene Park has faced with the encampments. The speaker calls for assurance that the Commission provides safety for the parks and meets their financial needs for the cleanup.
The 14th speaker also notes the same issues that previous community members from Eugene Park have made about the issues with the encampments and the lack of safety from the activities happening at the encampments.
The public comment section has concluded, and the meeting has moved onto the consent agenda.
The items from the consent agenda are being read off and include: the approval of meeting minutes for the annual board meeting from May 13, closed session minutes review, modification of the appointment term to the park employees’ annuity and benefit fund of Chicago, and requests to exercise the contracts with Enviroplus and McField & Associates for services and supplies.
The consent agenda has been approved by the Commission, and the meeting has moved onto new business.
The first item for new business includes authorization to award project and issue notice to proceed to Industria Inc for Jackson Park: Burnham Building Restoration. The presenter has finished their presentation with no questions from the Commissioners.
The motion for the first item has been approved by the Commission, and the second item on the agenda is the request to officially name Park No. 514 as Fillenwarth (Patty) Park. The request has met strong support from the community, according to the presenter.
The presenter has finished their presentation and opens to the Commission for questions. There are no questions from the Commissioners, and the motion is approved.
The third item for new business is the request to officially name the unnamed playground at 53rd St and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive within Washington Park to Ronald “Ronnieman” Johnson Playground. The same presenter for the park renaming has presented this motion to the Commission, and the motion has been approved by the Commission.
The fourth item on the agenda is the settlement of Eric Lyles v. Chicago Park District, and the motion has been approved by the Commission.
