The denial of eggs to school-kids is the perfect emblem of Hindutva modernity. This isn't the conservative modernity of late developers (Germany, Japan, China). It is not built upon elevating & mobilizing the whole mass of the population in a project of national development. 1/n
On the contrary, the whole point of Hindutva modernity is to keep the mass of population in its place: segregated & subservient to a pathological elite. Conservative elites of imperial Germany & Japan were also wary of modern mass politics but not allergic to collective potential
of the people. They understood that most important resource base of any nation were its people, who were given best possible level of education & nutrition. What Hindutva has eagerly learnt from their developmental paths is rejection of some facets of Western liberal democracy.
But there is no conception of building up our own kind of developmental bureaucracy, industrial policy, scientific-tech autonomy or public education. Hindutva-addled Middle Class Uncles think the way to Singapore is to keep drilling down on the persecution of poors & minorities
Beyond that Hindutva provides no roadmap of national development. In effect it throws its full weight behind status-quo Manmohan-Montek path of being the best IMF pupils. The way Modi mentions 'whole of government' approach fr conducting RENEET is enough to know they have no clue
For our ruling class ideologues, there is no alternative beyond wagging your tounge for FDI & climbing Ease of Doing Bizness charts.

Or commit to any other made-up rankings & To-do-reform lists they make sub-Saharan Africa & South Asia do, and then judge like Anglo headmasters.
Hindutva proponents have no problem if India does not achieve the basic level of industrialization & urbanization required for a decent modern existence. Its okay if most people remain stuck on dwindling unproductive farms or are pushed to slave away in service-sector gig work.
That is perfect for urbane Hindutva proponents (all of whom come from the top 5% crust served by this service sector slave economy).
It does not bother them that our biggest cities like Delhi are full of people living near open nullahs or garbage dumps.
No pangs of guilt or solidarity over our such pathetic poverty, just occasional shame when their videos are seen by white people on the internet. One reason why Hindu-Right reactionary modernity has no real roadmap of national development is bcoz it has no great power ambitions
Unlike imperial Germany/Japan or contemporary China, 'emerging' India has no appetite to hold its own against reigning superpowers, let alone to command its own distinctive voice & decisive weight on global politics. That wud require building a world-class defence industrial base
The only ambition of our deformed Hindutva-fied modernity is to keep the bottom caste-class majority in their place, and to persecute minorities for some abstract ideological fulfilment. That is it. There is nothing more to it, as should have been clear after twelve years of this

This old piece of news about a Meghalaya woman ejected from Delhi Golf club for "looking like a maid" reminded me of a memory from our PSU township, an ideological representation of Nehruvian dream of modern India. I was having dinner with a kid (Nepali kid, son of the house-help
whose quarters was attached to our home. Of course, the house came with a bell so that the owner could summon their assigned helps by pressing a button, like a good English slave owner. Anyway, i was having dinner with him at the "officers club", my parents were away. There was
just one other family there. After a while, a person came up to us and said that the kid would have to leave because this was the officers club. He wouldnt tell me whether the other family had complained but I was positive that it was the case. Imagine getting disturbed at the

I think the present time might serve as ample evidence that for a large section of Hindus (contrary to minorities) faith comes before the nation. I know this might seem counterintuitive to most people raised within a Hindu middle class sensibility. So let me briefly explain
The normative assumption in the statement is that by nation we mean the constitutional republic of India, as forged during the colonial struggle. After all, the concept of a modern nation did not exist before colonialism. Any imaginative connection beyond that to the modern
nation of India, while not being invalid, is an entirely subjective notion. For example, you can join any dots in the past to make your historical story of India (as Nehru/Gandhi/Tagore did, all remarkable attempts, though not without flaws). But none of them tried to impose

I have come across this statement often, and it troubles me because it is meant to do precisely what it claims to refuse: establish a claim of superiority. In other words, Hindusim represents a superior philosophical outlook because of its universality of paths to God.
And it further posits the Hindu view of religious tolerance- believing all religious paths have the same validity- as the only true and universal notion of religious tolerance. This paradoxical gambit opens up Christianity and Islam to charges of being fundamentally intolerant.
But there is nothing intolerant in a belief in monotheism. It does not imply mocking the God of others, just believing in the truth of your God, and the path laid down by your faith. It is perfectly compatible with respecting the faith of others, even if you don't believe in it.

It's quite interesting how Curb your Enthusiasm is liked by people across the political spectrum while Manu Joseph's Decoupled is so polarising and seems to have generated a following mostly among the RW. Having seen both the shows, I think there's a simple reason behind this.
Both shows tackle contentious subjects and use it for their gags. Race, gender, religion is a running theme in Curb. But for Larry David, the object is to mine the awkwardness around these issues for comedy, to explore the lines between different divides. Whereas for Decoupled
the object is to cross the lines, create shock value, and hope the comedy follows. Curb is not interested in any agenda beyond creating funny gags, it is neither progressive nor reactionary. Decoupled is explicitly a vehicle for the worldview of Manu Joseph, and plays more like

Since I see many strong disagreements, let me clarify: India maintained a liberal and democratic form for so long because of an enlightened group of post-colonial elites who gave the country a strong institutional framework of negotiation between groups, and followed through.
Unlike other South Asian nations, the leadership made no attempt to force through a singular idea of the nation or dominance of an ethnic group. What Stepan, Linz, and Y Yadav called the "state-nation" model. And it's not just about the Constitutional framework. The institutions
it gives birth to are in the most vulnerable state in the first two decades or so. The Constitutions of Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Burma were radically re-written within the first two decades. PM Bandaranaike passed the Official Language Act in the first decade of SL independence,

This is the most plausible explanation- the BJP created a fake Covid document on the template of an authentic Central Vista document. Like effective propaganda, it mixes the authentic with the fake, judging that most people don't have the bandwidth to separate the two.
Most ordinary people consume political news at the surface level. Not many have the time or inclination to go into the details of every political controversy. The function of propoganda is to make incendiary claims backed by evidence that appear to have some markers if truth
behind it. In this case, that appearance of truth is created by sharing the details of the other document. When you have such a formidable communication machinery- including news channels- it does not require much evidence to create impressions of wrongdoing, which is the purpose
