How does one find words for the betrayal of trust that occurs at both an individual & collective level when Christ's church fails the most vulnerable? What descriptors will account for the compounded betrayal that comes from organizational structures that enable abuse? 🧵
What vocabulary can reveal the weight of shame & victim blaming when the rarity of public disclosure occurs? What dictionary catalogs the "in-house" responses from pastors & staff-members equipped with zero training or awareness? 2/
How do we parse the complicated whirlwind of community betrayal, good intentions, and not-so-good intentions? What thesaurus spells out the impact of absent safeguarding and protective measures? The culpability of negligent and nonfunctional response procedures? 3/
Statements of grief & prayer are a poor offering on the balance scale of justice.

And minimizing victim-blaming language just adds to the betrayal. 4/
B/c how do you find words to describe the nightmare of known perpetrators being relocated to other churches? Of performative rehabilitation that prioritizes a dangerous person's spiritual desires or ministerial ambitions over safeguarding the vulnerable? 5/
What is the study Bible prepared to cross-reference distorted theologies, teachings regarding obedience, submission & insta-compliance, or warped requirements for forgiveness and grace? Where are the commentaries by which we can account for the spiritual betrayal? 6/
Who will preach on the community complicity, the cultures & ignorance that contributed to gatherings ripe for abuse? What sermon will identify the gradual nature of understanding, the length of time it takes for a child victim to even begin to name the abuse? 7/
It is the worst kind of self-betrayal when the body of Christ turns away from the acute pain of our suffering members that happened on our watch, blaming the injured & defending the indefensible. B/c while perpetrators inflicted abuse, countless other factors enabled it. 8/
Every single one of the "leaders" who now, knowing everything, with endless opportunities to learn, triple-down & deny responsibility, making a mockery of this, should immediately find a new job.

All comments show is that they've disqualified themselves from pastoral ministry.9/
What will be the precise terminology over which Christians begin to own collective responsibility? What exact events make the crushing lifelong legacy of abuse done in God's Name worthy of such language? 10/
When will it be a crisis? How many children must come forward to tip that scale a little further? And how many more who will never disclose are hidden behind that statistic? And what are their names? 11/
There is One who sees & knows, the same who used the language of millstones for *one*, who sent prophets with pointed messages for the people of God who volleyed "How have we despised your Name?" when confronted w/their actions. 12/
We can use whatever words we want to describe this moment of apocalypse & reckoning, the laying bare of unbearable things that have been done in secret, the destruction of God's temple, which isn't the organization or denominations or the institutionalized church. 13/
When one part suffers, every part suffers. Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple. /end

Whenever the "spanking" conversation goes viral, I find myself angry all over again at how many Christian parents have been told to administer physical violence during the very formative years of infancy, toddlerhood & preschool years.

Robs families of so much. 🧵
Take half a minute to observe children at this age & you will see their vulnerability, their constant checking in w/caregivers as they make sense of the world around them, the slow pace at which they operate.

Yet in moments of frustration adults assign them malicious motives. +
Because of parental inconvenience & overwhelm, adults who don't know what to do see a child's immaturity and vulnerability, or fail to rise to the maturity required of *parents,* and think: danger! Rebellion! Willfulness!

And then they lash out. +

Tedd Tripp’s SACH, one of the most popular Christian parenting books, tells parents that their responsibility goes deeper than shaping behaviors & into the realm of a child’s heart, which is primarily defined by this anthropological throughline: ppl are sinners. 🧵 Image
This hyperfocus on sin (a term that remains undefined for readers) combines w/an impoverished portrayal of children as essentially sinful adults in little bodies who act out adult behaviors using vocabulary borrowed from nouthetic, or biblical, counseling.
A 6YO is a “relationship junkie” w/“sexually loaded” thoughts; a 7YO is “wicked,” like “one whose cup is washed & clean on the outside, but is filthy on the inside”; a girl on the playground needs to be “rescued from a life of finding comfort & meaning in controlling others.

More than a decade ago, I weaned my 3rd child in 4 yrs & soon experienced debilitating panic. My world closed in as I read my Bible for hours each morning, memorized chapters of Scripture, systematized my domestic duties according to spiritual ideals, & prayed. Compulsively.🧵 Image
God in His kindness answered my prayers through a licensed mental health counselor who identified my postpartum OCD and through a physician who discovered my nonexistent vitamin D stores. I did not recover overnight.
The ministry of these ppl, therapy, uninterrupted sleep, exercise, nutrition, and many other things helped me heal. What did not help was my spiraling obsession over what sins were causing my distress, something I now know to be a hallmark of scrupulosity, or religious OCD. Image

Dear Beginning-Church-Planter’s-Wife Me: I see you there, w/your earnest zeal & your highlighted crinkle-paged Bible & your life verse that reminds you to run hard. I know how you love Jesus & I’ve watched you sing For All the Saints with gusto every November. 🧵 Image
I’ve read that fat stack of books by your bed, the ones that tell you how to organize your house & make the most of your time, the lists for Scripture memory & Bible study & scheduled exercise & regular sex and balanced meals & the Exhaustive Guide to being an Excellent Wife™ 2/ Image
I see you packing up boxes for your cross country move: your 3YO tangled up in packing tape on one side, your 16 mo old & his unsupervised Sharpie on the other, & that brand new baby strapped to your front. As your southern friends would say: Bless your heart. 3/

Lazarus, the friend of Jesus, is stone-cold, four-days dead. And Jesus, with a word, . . . brings him back to embodied life.

We probably have heard sermons parsing out the details: 🧵 Image
Jesus was a short journey away, He intentionally waits—despite his love for Lazarus & his sisters—He comes to Bethany too late. Lazarus’ disease has so overtaken him that he is sealed up in death, shut off from his family, from his community, and from his life. 2/
As I consider the imagery of the tomb, I don’t have to wonder very long to recognize the graves in my own soul. I know them well, these dead places I’ve long sealed off to keep the odor of decay at bay.

“Take away the stone,” Jesus says to the bystanders. 3/

From the beginning, it’s never been good for men to be alone. But somehow many of us still insist on male-only ordinands, pastors, or leaders. 🧵
From Eden, the pattern appears to be men and women together as priests and prophets doing priestly work as living icons who reflect God’s image. Many churches, however, have inverted this, impoverishing the church by functionally withholding and muffling the witness of women. 2/
If we misread passages like Titus 2 to be re: women hosting women’s Bible studies, if we see women named as house church leaders in Acts & imagine they were busy fixing up the guest rooms, we miss the female priests and elders and leaders all across the pages of the NT. 3/
