ECUADOR, 1960-1963:

"Why were these charges deemed unworthy of reporting or comment, let alone investigation?"
In September 1960, a new Ecuadoran government headed by Jose Maria Velasco Ibarra won a decisive electoral victory.
Running a vague populist message and expressing dissent for U.S. policy in Cuba & other Latin American countries, he was an obvious target.
The CIA immediately began planting phony anti-Communist news stories in Ecuadoran newspapers.
CIA agents bombed churches and right-wing organizations and then make it appear to be the work of leftist groups in Ecuador.

Buying mobs.
Finally, in 1961, the CIA-backed military junta forced Velasco Ibarra to resign. Vice-President Carlos Julio Arosemana replaced Ibarra.
There were two candidates for vice-president: a CIA agent and the rector of Central University.

The CIA planted communist propaganda.
Shortly after Ibarra's ousting, Arosemana proved unacceptable to the CIA.

On July 11, 1963 the Presidential Palace was surrounded by tanks.
Arosemana was out, and the CIA-backed junta was in.

Their first act: arrest and torture "communists" and "extreme" leftists.
The 1964 elections were canceled--the usual story in CIA-controlled Latin America.

Thousands of Ecuadorians were tortured and executed.
