Ok, thread. Seeing some folks express bewilderment that a woman, Betsy Devos, is actively working against women's interests.
Women who make careers enabling wealthy white men get high rewards: jobs, wealth, belief that they're better than those other women.
It's not just right wing women who do this. When I was younger an older feminist told me fight against sexual harassment was going too far.
We were getting rid of a useful weapon, she said. Madness! Men ogling and touching us is no big deal; it's a sign of their weakness.
Obv. rape, she said, was terrible, had to be punished, but rest of it was one of our best methods to control men. I stared at her in horror.
She literally said, boys will be boys. And she meant it. She said my generation were big babies for complaining. It's just how the world is.
It's still a common attitude across the political spectrum. Belief that men can't control themselves runs deep even though it's total bs.
Think about it, if all men truly can't control themselves, then they'd all be rapists. Every single one. But they're not.
So, yes, there are women who don't see getting rid of rape culture to be in their interests.
More common are the women who are just used to it and will agree that sexual harassment is annoying but what can be done? They shrug a lot.
And look at you like you're trying to argue for changing water from being wet. But rape culture can change, IS being changed.
Title IX and Obama's letter have changed things on campuses across the USA. And Betsy Devos wants to undo that. We must fight.
But remember many women stay silent not because there are rewards for doing so but because of the very horrible punishments for speaking up.
Patriarchy requires many hands to keep it going. Same with white supremacy.
