Here's the thing - there is situational depression, and there is clinical depression. The first can be alleviated. The second is trickier.
If you are depressed because of something that has happened to or around you, time and change might help.
If you have clinical depression, it's because something in your brain is different from those without clinical depression.
And the root of that is still debated by the top researchers in their field. It may be chemical, it may be cognitive.
But the results of clinical depression are both chemical AND cognitive.

Further, different types of clinical depression exist.
Dysthymia, persistent depressive disorder, is a mild to moderate type of clinical depression.

Major depressive disorder is severe & acute.
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is one that comes on in winter due to lack of sunlight. There are many more, but guess who has these ones?
Because guess what, clinical depression can also stack so that you are always either mild, moderate, or severely depressed. Yay.
Depression is real. You feel sad, you can't move on. If you have chronic depression you will always be depressed. But your life won't be.
I had a major breakdown earlier this year. I have had three such breakdowns and many minor ones. I had a minor one on Sunday.
Since I was diagnosed, I have flopped out of university and the workforce, held down a job and got a Masters, become a successful writer.
Right now, I cannot work. I can barely look after myself. But that will change. I might end up back here again, but that's how illness works
Depression is real and complicated and utterly completely personal to each person who has it. Grand statements help no one.
It gets better and it gets worse. Your illness is not comparable to anyone elses. And it is a real illness, same and as valid as others.
Nobody questions the existence of heart illness. Doctors still don't understand the brain.

Brain conditions are REAL. You are valid ❤️
And people who say "depression isn't real"? Well, I envy them. But I also pity them for being utter assbutts 😊
Btw, I am currently "in crisis". Last psych appointment was July. Next is October. No therapy available in my area except online CBT 😐
So please take all your feel good "time to talk" nonsense and get in the bin.

The onus is not on us to reach out but on YOU to reach in. Be there for your depressed friends and family. We need you.
(I am okay, I should add. On the path to healing by doing a lot of work myself with a lot of support from others 💕)
