1. This @washingtonpost piece on Kaepernick's vs. Tebow's Christianity unfortunately decolves into false equivalence washingtonpost.com/amphtml/news/a…
2. Meaning that WaPo, once again, ends up coddling toxic Evangelicalism, b/c that is what WaPo does. What's with the "come together" appeal?
3. Michael Frost's analysis starts to go south when he suggests that the social justice Christianity of Kaepernick lacks personal piety.
4. There's one small problem with that (apart from it being a false dichotomy on its face). Even in the article Kaepernick's piety shines.
5. Frost has to do these ridiculous logical gymnastics, you see, because he needs there to be a problem with Kaepernick's Christianity.
6. If there's no problem with Kaepernick's Christianity, Frost will not be able to produce a neat and tidy schema that redeems Tebow's.
7. So Frost conjures up this entirely artificial model in which Kaepernick's and Tebow's Christianity each have something the other's lacks.
8. Frost's solution? Come together! Heal the divisions! Why can't Rev. Dr. Barber and Robert Jeffress just get along? We're all Americans?
9. Like the white moderate's privileged gradualism MLK criticizes in Letter from Birmingham Jail, Frost ultimately protects the status quo.
10. I think Frost does so because he, like WaPo and most US MSM and polite US culture, refuses to face Evangelicalism's white supremacism.
11. Frost is following an all too pervasive formula that insists we must not go too far in criticizing white/conservative Evangelicalism.
12. This view refuses to see that white Evangelicalism is authoritarian in nature and toxic through and through. Saying so is not "civil."
13. Here's the uncomfortable truth. Kaepernick's Christianity does not need anything from Tebow's. Tebow's is irredeemable. #EmptyThePews
14. As an ex-Evangelical, I know Evangelical authoritarianism from the inside. I know its complicity in white supremacy. #LeftTheFold
15. I know conservative Evangelicalism's rigid patriarchal hierarchy, its anti-LGBTQ animus, its pervasive culture of abuse.
16. And the MSM are doing us a disservice by continuing to treat conservative Evangelicals as mainstream instead of a threat to human rights
17. Do better, @washingtonpost. At least balance your coddling of conservative Evangelicals with ex-Evangelical perspectives and voices.
17. Meanwhile, #ImWithKaepernick. #TakeAKnee, and if yours is a toxic Tebow and Trump church, #EmptyThePews. End thread.
*devolves. Gah I hate when I make a typo in the first tweet of a thread.
*18. Whoops. I hate when I screw up thread numbers.
19. I've written this critique of WaPo's coverage of Kaepernick vs. Tebow as a blog post you can share off Twitter: chrisstroop.com/2017/09/25/the…
