I'm going to briefly explain why this meme about gun ownership & #GunViolence is wrong.

<short thread>
1. The ⬇️ in gun homicides reflects an overall drop in violent crime over the same time period due to many factors unrelated to # of guns.
2. In fact, the drop in gun homicide rates has not kept pace with the overall drop in violent crime during the same period.
3. If you look at the chart, you'll notice that most of the drop in gun homicides was during the 90s. That matters..
4. Guess what happened during the 90s? Bill Clinton implemented stronger gun laws. And that's when gun homicides dropped the most.
5. And as you can see, after GW Bush took office, the sharp decrease in gun homicides suddenly stopped.
6. Gun homicides alone don't give an accurate portrayal of all gun deaths. You have to look at suicides, too, which changes the picture.
7. Suicides comprise the majority of gun deaths. You can't just leave them out.

8. Looking at national trends w/o accounting for state variation in gun ownership & gun homicides is bad science meant to mislead.
9. Here's what it looks like when you plot gun ownership rates by gun deaths at the state level. A bit different.…
10. Here's the correlation btw gun ownership & gun homicide at the state level, controlled for confounding variables
11. States w/ assault weapons' bans, trigger locks, OR safe storage requirements have fewer gun deaths than states w/o those laws.
12. Once again, this is why looking only @ national trends is so misleading.

13. It's not just abt the # of guns out there. You have to consider laws regulating who can buy guns (& how), where guns can be carried, etc
14. In sum: That meme reflects the junk science that the NRA & friends have to rely on b/c real science doesn't back up their claims. -X-
