Maybe a greater focus on ‘grassroots’ funding might be in order here? Allowing communities, small scale production, artists’ cooperatives
To keep cultural production going & alive rather than mainly focusing on the ‘big players’ which are mainly accessed by limited audiences
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against ‘big players’ & totally value their existence & do no wish 2 see their extinction but I do think
CS focuses on high visibility players be it companies or individuals & kind of neglects artistic production that happens at local level
Since, councils have all but abolished their art budgets community arts & non high profile artists have been abandoned leaving a cultural
Wasteland behind. Begging the question: why is culture/arts important, who is it for? For those who produce it & their communities or 4 an
‘External market’. To keep the nation active, healthy & engaged or to simply show off to the world? A bit like the olympics, where a
Nation doesn’t access sports as a matter of fact but an elite team gets sent out to win medals...
