I'd like to talk a bit about @Lawyers4Choice, who many people probably know from our #8Committee marathon livetweets.
We're a group of lawyers, both academics and practitioners, mostly Irish by background and based in Ireland and the UK.
We're passionate about public education and awareness of reproductive justice issues across the island of Ireland.
Twitter is an amazing tool for this, especially with unfolding events like #8Committee or the @CitizAssembly - coverage plus commentary.
We also do talks and events; write academic articles, opinion pieces, and blogposts; draft model legislation; take on advisory roles.
Having legal voices in #repealthe8th is incredibly important - it's a means of understanding the arena everything else plays out on.
The differences between the Constitution and legislation, the necessity of a referendum, the many post-repeal options...
The Citizens' Assembly showed that non-lawyers are more willing and able to take these things on board than our politicians seem to think.
And it's absolutely vital that they do. Law around #repealthe8th shouldn't be the preserve of academics and politicians.
We all have to live in this system, after all. Social media is a great public communications system, because it's democratic.
Anyone can throw questions at @Lawyers4Choice & we try to answer them (please feel free to throw qs at me while I've got this account too!)
The next few wks are going to be vital as the #8Committee completes its work and makes its recommendations, then it'll be time to campaign.
The more informed campaigners able to tell everyone else what we're campaigning for and why, the more informed voters.
So hopefully five-hour #8Committee livetweet sessions will be worth it come next May!
If you'd ever like a speaker or input into an article, get in touch and we'll try our best to oblige (jobs and research notwithstanding!)
But even with the busy-ness of work/study and activism, it's very rewarding to be having an impact in a campaign you care about. Worth it!
