Sinclair Broadcast Group. Maybe you've heard of it. Maybe not. Either way, Sinclair SHOULD be a household name. Allow me to explain. 1/
2/ Sinclair is the largest owner-operator of local TV stations in the US. Tulsa, Columbus, DC, Flint, Boise, etc motherjones.com/politics/2017/…
3/ You don't see Sinclair's name in your nightly newscast. You see your local call sign. But Sinclair reaches 2 out of every 5 households.
4/ And it's poised to get waaaaaay bigger if it merges (as proposed) with Tribune Media. The deal would put Sinclair in 72% of homes:
5/ Sinclair's Tribune deal—for $3.9 billion!—would give Sinclair WGN in Chicago, KTLA in LA, WPIX in NYC—the US's 3 largest media markets.
6/ So, you ask: Why should I care?
7/ Because Sinclair uses its vast reach to push a pro-Trump, partisan msg.

See:

And:
8/ But Sinclair isn't Fox News. It's something different. Sneakier. It slips conservative commentary between local weather, sports, traffic.
9/ Since 9/11, Sinclair has found ways to not-so-subtly insert a conservative worldview into the work of its stations around the country:
10/ Sinclair was unabashed in its pro-GOP advocacy during the Bush years:
11/ That coziness was local too. An ex-producer once said he was tasked to make an homage tape for MD's GOP governor documentcloud.org/documents/4053…
12/ That pro-GOP posture continued thru the '16 presidential race. First Sinclair seemed to rally behind Dr. Ben Carson:
13/ Once Carson was out, Sinclair swung to Donald Trump. Recall Jared Kushner's comments (reported by @Politico): politico.com/story/2016/12/…
14/ Sinclair's longtime leader, David Smith, left nothing doubt over what he hoped to see from President Trump: "complete deregulation"
15/ The Trump FCC has paved the way for Sinclair's growth. For more, read:

NYT nytimes.com/2017/08/14/us/…

Politico politico.com/story/2017/08/…
16/ So what's Sinclair's endgame? Actually, Sinclair's new CEO laid it out pretty clearly in an investor call earlier this year:
17/ The final result? Sinclair could become what @JayRosen once predicted: "a political empire with TV stations." motherjones.com/politics/2017/…
18/ End of thread. Thanks for tuning in.
18a/ Is Sinclair Broadcast Group in your city? Got a tip? A Sinclair story you want to share?
