During #TransgenderAwarenessMonth, can we talk less about trans murders and more about how, as a society, we drive trans suicidality?
FORTY PERCENT of trans people will attempt suicide in their lives. That number is MASSIVE.
In contrast, among the general population, that number is 0.6% (cdc.gov/violencepreven…)
That means trans people are SEVENTY TIMES more likely to attempt suicide at some point in their lives.
It's so easy to talk about trans people getting murdered; it's a cause celebre with a clear bad guy who isn't you.
It's easy to point and say "yeah that sure does suck, trans people shouldn't get murdered."
But the real threat is suicide. And we *all know why.*
It's my go-to; we kill ourselves not because we're trans, but because Y'ALL MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO LIVE.
There's overt harassment (and HOO BOY do I have stories), and there's little shit like misgendering that's NOTHING to you but can absolutely
demolish us. Those are two ends of a spectrum, though; even well-meaning cis ppl say shit that is incredibly demeaning and othering.
We're chronically unemployed or underemployed. We have an INCREDIBLY hard time finding work. We deal with constant stares, constant
invalidation, constant fear of assault. We do this after suffering life-long trauma, so we're already fucking MESSES.
We chronically lack access to necessary healthcare and mental health services. We internalize a message that we're worthless freaks.
Eventually those messages sustain themselves in our heads but we're not making this shit up.
We get that stuff over a LIFETIME.
And (this is important) so do you.
We're not the ones firing trans workers. We're not the ones stigmatizing trans care. We're not the ones engaging in housing discrimination.
When i say "y'all make it impossible for us to live" i fucking mean that. There are barriers to trans people *surviving*.
Half the country hates us, and the half that doesn't? Well, a lot of y'all dont particularly *like* us, either
Its almost impossible to watch a fucking sitcom without some shitty, invalidating joke being thrown at us.
Our support systems collapse after we come out. Partners leave us. Parents disown us. Friends abandon us.
Often all of that happens at the same time, and your life essentially collapses.
(a correction; I misread a statistic, and the national suicide attempt rate is 4.6%, not 0.6% as above)
(relevant correction)
Hmmmm. I wonder why we're killing ourselves?
its ALMOST AS IF BEING TRANS FORCES YOU INTO SOCIAL MARGINALIA.
So, this #TransAwarenessMonth, be aware of YOUR BEHAVIOR. YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THESE PROBLEMS.
And we've just been talking about attempts. What about suicidal ideation?

EIGHTY. TWO. PERCENT.
EIGHT OUT OF TEN TRANS PEOPLE has had serious thoughts about killing themselves.

Me included.

Recently.
ONE-THIRD attempted suicide for the first time before they were THIRTEEN.
This isn't an abstract problem. It's a massive, ongoing crisis facing the trans community.
It has real consequences and affects real people.

We. Are. *Dying*.
If you want to help, there's lots of things you can do. In the short term? Cruise #TransCrowdFund and see who is in crisis mode and help.
Sometimes that means someone needs $50 so they get food this week. Or they need to make rent before they lose their home.
In bigger picture ways, pay attention to YOUR OWN behavior and see how you might be contributing to a toxic anti-trans environment.
It could be as simple as gender-policing or cracking transphobic jokes.
It's all going to depend on you and your circumstances. But be mindful.

Thanks.
