1) Good article. I'll add another thing that's making the NFL decline in popularity: changes to the college game that has led to far fewer available NFL QB's.
2) Over half these guys starting at QB in the league right now wouldn't have even cracked the starting line up 20 years ago.
3) So many colleges running gimmicky systems instead of pro style drop back passing has lead to a dearth of NFL-ready QB's coming up from the college ranks.
4) At the same time that was happening at the college level, NFL clubs themselves stopped spending major times developing rookie QB's. It used to be they'd spend 2-3 seasons getting a guy ready to start.
5) Both alarming trends met in the middle some time ago. Now a NFL ready college QB from a drop back/play action passing system in college is so RARE teams will give the farm to land one, as we saw with Jared Goff & the Rams.
6) Goff & Carson Wentz are both exceptions, not the rule. 1/2 the teams in the NFL are getting what would be very substandard QB play compared to 1980's and 1990's.
7) So thin are the NFL QB ranks right now, that when a starter goes down a team's season is essentially over.
8) Not surprisingly, a lot of this awful QB play ends up making most of the NFL games we see these days almost unwatchable.
9) For every Drew Brees or Matt Ryan, there's a Matt Moore or a Tom Savage, guys who wouldn't even have made a NFL roster as a 3rd string in the 1990's.
