1. Just for the record: here is the section of New York State election law that governs registration for primaries - more accurately, changing or designating parties to take part in our closed primary system - again, New York State Law.
2. Here's the link. It's one helluva read, folks! All 722 pages. Get some hot cocoa, settle in. elections.ny.gov/NYSBOE/downloa…
3. Obviously, we need changes in New York. The law requires about 200 days before a presidential primary (depending on dates). Reformers in New York know this. #Indivisible - by far the strongest grassroots movement in NY - supports this. As do I.
4. What's standing in our way? The Republican-controlled State Senate - kept in GOP hands by the "Trump Democrats" of the turncoat IDC. Break their hold, unite Democrats, convince the Governor, and election reform is possible. #noIDCNY is our hashtag.
5. But here comes the misguided, reckless, and - in many ways - clueless recommendation of the DNC's tragic Unity Reform Commission. Guess what these geniuses have voted for? Yep - possible sanctions against New York State Democrats because of our state's law.
6. The URC voted to included in its recommendations - get this - the potential loss of delegates from New York if we don't fix our (awful) registration law. They must be new to politics, because here's a small clue for them: the GOP and IDC won't be cowering over this threat.
7. So the "unity" commission is threatening New York Dems. Indeed, one of "our" two state reps on the panel, Nomiki Konst, a regular on Fox News, helped lead the charge to threaten sanctions, heartily cheered on by the Sanders appointees on the URC. Some New Yorker!
8. I suspect the other appointees on the URC - from chair @jomalleydillon to @janekleeb to @jjz1600 - never looked at the state law before opening the door to sanctions. They didn't see how pressuring the state party means nothing, or how they cut the legs from under reformers.
9. So I'm calling on @jomalleydillon and @TomPerez to halt the process - to not submit a plan that include the possibility of sanctioning my fellow New York State Democrats. The URC needs to return to work and kill this horrendous proposal. It can and will be used against us.
