The only way to understand the history of @pivotalcf is to see where it was wisely a paradigm ahead. Features advance products, but paradigms are bets on the right side of history.
Before built in service discovery, routing, and circuit breakers designed applications having a system like BOSH to auto-update the platform would be an outage generator, but after that shift its 100x productivity shift.
While waterfall process ruled enterprises developer self services was a purely test/dev novelty (VMW labs manager), but weekly + deployments and CI/CD made @pivotalcf self service multi-tenancy a game changer for on-boarding and a shift to a devops model.
Before the enterprise shift towards microservices (one never fully arrives at them) the rapid restart app health management features of @pivotalcf would again generate outages of monoliths.
As Thomas Samuel Kuhn first outlined, the shift to microservices applications was not a recognizable 'new feature' of monolith era technologies and process but a new paradigm..breaking with the past model disruptively.
What's fascinating to me to watch is once the paradigm shifts how hard it is for legacy technologies to attempt to add the 'features' and outcomes of the history breaking product.
Because of BOSH and rapid update @pivotalcf now has perhaps the most compelling patching/update security story of any enterprise software; because of self-service on-demand it will soon automate networks once thought perpetually slow to move.
I share these remarks not to say that somehow we 'out-featured' the market, but just how humbling it is to be on a project that bets big and early on a paradigm shift; its a bad idea until its unstoppable, and generating 100x results vs. the past.
