Watching the chaos that is JFK airport on Snapchat and @flightradar24. Cannot believe it’s allowed to operate like this and hasn’t been shut down with all inbounds diverted.
The most insane part of the JFK madness right now is that it has been going on for DAYS. Seeing some jokes about airlines turning round over the Atlantic, but no joke, that’s a better option right now.
Meanwhile, there are two Aeroflot flights with the same flight number on the ground at JFK. I can’t even.
This reminds me of the time in 1994 where it took me three days to get back to the UK from JFK after an ice storm. Formative experience — I always say watching airline people dealing with the chaos hooked me on this industry — but terrible #PaxEx.
Terminal 1 is, as ever, an absolute dumpster fire. Watching passengers chanting for their flight to be the next given a gate. Utter insanity.
All of these aircraft are still heading for JFK, per @flightradar24. This seems…unwise.
Astounding. This @emirates A380 was the flight that diverted from JFK to Pittsburgh, then flew to Dallas, and is now making its way back to New York.
Listening to the @liveatc feed. JFK ground is not best pleased with this Xiamen flight blocking a taxiway.
There seem to be some disabled (ground?) vehicles blocking part of the Terminal 1 alleyways, because what T1 needed was more things getting in the way.

Ah, I see there's a Wamos 747 operating for Norwegian at JFK. At what point does it become counter to advertising standards legislation for Norwegian to sell tickets for its 787 product?
Speaking of Norwegian and #PaxEx, it's truly disconcerting to see the number of passengers begging for an update, any update, with zero response from @Fly_Norwegian.
Meanwhile, on one of the Aeroflot flights at JFK (I think the one that came in from Dulles as one of the two SU100s today): the crew has timed out while sitting on a taxiway, are turning their engines off and have requested to disembark their crew.
Yes, it’s Aeroflot 100, the one that came up from Dulles. I guess they’re just going to leave the plane parked out there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Unsurprisingly, JFK ground is asking the Aeroflot crew to start up the engines again and disembark the crew somewhere else. This is the aviation equivalent of someone running out from the store and yelling HEY BUDDY YOU CAN’T PARK THERE
Has the second Aeroflot plane (the one ferried in from Dulles) really been sitting at JFK for over nine hours?
Cosigned. Avoid JFK if at all humanly possible for the foreseeable future. This mess will take a LONG time to mop up, and it keeps getting messier.
This Aeroflot flight from Dulles has finally parked up and is now waiting for the Port Authority. What a fitting end to a miserable day for that crew.
That Emirates A380 that diverted to Pittsburgh, then Dallas-Fort Worth, has now arrived back into JFK. EK seems to be doing a pretty good job getting A380s out of JFK, all credit to them.

So, why is @JFKairport so messed up right now you ask? Well, Jason outlines three reasons here…
…and another two here. I would particularly draw your attention to number four (4), "General Incompetence".
Oh! Speaking of "general incompetence", the Port Authority — the odd multi-state agency that controls NY's airports and needs to be disbanded as soon as possible (#DisbandThePortAuthority) — finally has something to say about this colossal mess.
(Naturally, the Port Authority is too incompetent to be able to use 240 characters in tweets.)
Meanwhile, this Kuwait Airways flight says it has been given a three-hour wait for a gate, and is now being parked up to wait.
I 100% do not buy @PANYNJ’s excuse that @JFKairport equipment broke down. Temperatures are in the teens Fahrenheit, which is chilly, but normal winter weather.

If you are flying into or out of JFK T1 today (AKA the worst terminal pretty much ever), expect significant delays, because there are restrictions.
So, 24 years ago this week, I was an unaccompanied minor on @VirginAtlantic and it took three days to fly JFK-LHR during and after an ice storm. (The third time, I was upgraded to the brand new Mid Class, which… *shrugs, points to self and area of #PaxEx specialisation*)
Sure, JFK has changed since then. But the fundamental problems — the independent terminals and the abysmal work that @PANYNJ does (#DisbandThePortAuthority) is still the same.

Correction 2: if I’m reading this NOTAM right, JFK Terminal 1 is closed until 0400 NY time, but Terminal 4’s Concourse A (the Not Delta bit) is closed until 0900. Still clearly a colossal mess.
Korean, JAL are diverting away from JFK. Expect more, especially for airlines using T1 or T4.

Looks like the JAL flight that previously diverted to ORD on its way to JFK is now diverting to BOS on its way to JFK. Can’t catch a break desu ne.
Meanwhile, Delta has a special JFK meltdown hotline:
JFK is still a mess, with European carriers showing delays and cancellations for inbound flights. Terminal 1 and the A gates in Terminal 4 are still closed to all arriving aircraft. International airlines need to get a confirmed gate before dispatch.
Meanwhile, @British_Airways appears not to have noticed that its most frequently flown longhaul route is in chaos, and doesn’t seem to have put any extra staff on at Heathrow to rebook JFK passengers.
In London, this passenger with an @AmericanAir ticket on BA metal (on the transatlantic metal-neutral joint venture) is in T5, with no AA presence is being told that BA can’t help her. These joint ventures, ugh, I can’t.

Delta isn’t covering itself in glory at JFK either.
It’s 5am and cold at JFK — 6F, -14C — but it *is* January. If the airport’s equipment can’t handle this kind of temperature, which is unusual but not outside the known envelope, that’s a failure of planning, not weather.
Some standard and JFK airline disruption advice: if you're travelling to or from JFK today: DON'T. Rebook yourself to any other airport — LaGuardia or Newark are in better shape. Connect if you have to rather than taking a nonstop to JFK. Try not to check a bag. 1/
Wear very warm winter clothing: I see reports of terminals so cold you can see your breath. Bring food and drink: energy bars, chocolate, at least 2L of water per person. Pack extra medication in your hand luggage. Consider some precautionary Berocca/EmergenC to stay healthy. 2/
If you don't have a US mobile phone/SIM card, arrange call and data time with your mobile provider in advance. Consider a VOIP calling solution like Skype Unlimited World. Find the airline's US, home and any international phone numbers and save them in a note on your phone. 3/
(Often, calling an open call center in another country's daytime will get you faster results than calling the local one at 5am.) Also useful: the airline's JFK local number (will probably start with 718) and any special baggage hotline. 4/
Follow your airline (and their support channel as well if they have a separate one) on Twitter and use DMs liberally. Make sure you have the airline's app downloaded and have added your booking into it, and refresh it regularly. 5/
During disruption (or expected disruption), I always recommend buying your way into the airline's lounge if possible, which is usually an option for US airlines in particular. Doing so not only gets you a more comfortable place to wait, but access to a separate set of staff. 6/
Charge your phone. Bring an external battery, ideally with a capacity in mAh of twice or three times your phone's power. Load phones and tablets with content — downloadable Netflix is ideal. If you have a US extension cord, bring that too — power sockets are a scarce resource. 7/
Consider calling the airline to add a trusted friend, relative or colleague as an authorised user to your booking. They can take your instructions and pass them on to the airline, especially if you are low on battery or stuck indoors without signal. 8/
If you do get stuck, consider starting a WhatsApp group with other people on your flight to maximise information flow from the airline and airport. Being able to see what fellow passengers in your situation are being told can be very helpful. 9/

Nearly 24h of delay for this Emirates A380 at JFK, but the airline is keeping those superjumbos coming in and out. The crew logistics alone are astounding to think about.
