Letter from Birmingham Jail was written in response to "A Call for Unity", an open letter published by white Alabama clergymen.
They called the civil rights efforts of 1963 "unwise and untimely".
They called on black protestors to leave the streets and take their struggle to the courts (as if they couldn't and weren't doing both)
They were Episcopal, Roman Catholic, Methodist, Jewish, Presbyterian, and Baptist clerics.

Sensible. Moderate. Pragmatic. Solutions-based.
Never forget that "calls for unity" and appeals for respectability can silence calls for reparations, justice, and actual peace. #reclaimMLK
Letter from Birmingham Jail wasn’t just a cute, pithy epistle. It was a thoughtful, critical, illuminating indictment of civil rights “allyship”.
