Eradicating poverty and inequality will never be accomplished by assimilating into existing hierarchical structures and competing for a better position within them.
We need to imagine a non-hierarchical and non-authoritarian alternative that is based on cooperation, not competition.
Where there is competition, there will always be losers. Where there are hierarchies, there will always be people at the bottom.
Where there are elites, even if they reached the top through "merit", there will always be incentives to cheat those at the bottom and game the system in order to remain on top.
It is nonsensical to expect equality and justice in a context of hierarchies and competition. The goal should be about dismantling the structures that create poverty and inequality in the first place.
It's not about being admitted into the circle of winners. Instead, it is about realizing that the beautiful palace the winners inhabit is made out of illusions and it oppresses everyone inside and outside of it.
This is an accurate illustration of what exists outside the crystal palace and what it costs.
The problem for those inside the crystal palace is that they live of illusions and they have stopped identifying with what is real. Our houses and our food are not made out of money, degrees and titles. We are not these things either.
It is not clear to me how things should change, but I know it has to do with ceasing to identify with the crystal palace and instead creating something new or maybe rediscovering ways of living based on natural systems.
I insist on going back to nature, not just because we need to save the environment and stop global warming.
What's important to understand is that dismantling oppressive structures without going back to nature is an impossibility. And likewise, saving the environment while keeping oppressive structures intact is equally impossible.
Schools should help students survive within the crystal palace, but it is much more important that they build and offer a way out.
And in this sense non-hierarchical and non-authoritarian alternatives to conventional schools are not enough if they don't reconnect with the knowledge and skills of earth economies instead of those of money and exploitation based economies.
The crystal palace was built and has been sustained through alienating people from natural systems, dispossessing them from their lands, displacing them, and forcing them into cycles of labor, consumption, debt, and hence, dependency.
It is crucial to understand this because without land, without reclaiming our place and role in nature, there's no freedom.
I will end this by saying that permaculture offers a practical and realistic approach to building a way out that is not about socialism or communism versus capitalism, but about natural systems versus control and exploitation systems.
About a paradigm of scarcity versus a paradigm of abundance.
And not about theoretical posturing and idealism, but about people taking direct action and making this change. It's a quiet revolution.
