“Unskilled labor” isn’t a thing that exists. She had the needed skills for a needed job. She kept a park that sees 44,000 visitors a day clean and presentable, something Disney stakes their reputation on. A living wage isn’t overpaying her, it’s the bare minimum of acceptable.
Remember that the phrase “unskilled labor“ was coined to make you think that you and your job make you superior to people who do very necessary work within the structures of our society.
“Unskilled labor“ is a dog whistle, created and used by people who have a personal and/or financial interest in the exploitation of blue and pink collar workers. They’ve managed to convince you that their inhumane behavior is justified.
But remember that without what’s classed as “unskilled labor“ you do not have a bite of food to eat, clothes to wear, or clean public accommodations anywhere that you go. No one watches your kids, no one cares for your grandparents in the nursing home. You rely on it.
And more importantly, the work of “unskilled laborers” requires skill. It also requires great stamina, initiative, critical judgment, trustworthiness and reliability. You do not know how to clean a hotel room properly. You are not prepared to care for a dozen two-year-olds.
When you denigrate the work of people who are the critical underpinnings of the comfortable life you lead, please know that you are revealing your essential lack of an ethical understanding of our world.
