Miitomo launched two years ago, and is shutting down in two months. It was an app where you collect digital clothing (and friends), and answer questions about yourself.

But instead of boring people with answers about myself, I decided to answer them as Samus Aran from Metroid.
One of the first questions every user was asked was the “how many flowers do you see” question. But it was a trick! When other users saw the answer, it said this is how many people you have a crush on.

My answer freaked people out with its accidental accuracy.
My Samus was very literal.
But also silly.
And sometimes meta.
The life of a video game character is strange...
Sometimes the questions got personal...
There were also puns.
I liked to bag on Other M, but also sometimes referenced it ironically.
Plus, references to things probably only two or three people will “get.”
References that Metroid fans would probably get.
Things you never knew about Samus Aran.
Samus felt forgotten and unappreciated, like Other M had ended her career.
It felt special when Metroid gear appeared. Initially I tried to make due with whatever I could find in the shop.
Miitomo had a lot of repeating questions asking about current events, which makes going through the logs feel like a mini time capsule.
But given the way the year went, it took a dark turn.
Things got bleak.
But there were also bright spots, like when two new Metroid games were announced.
Like most people, I drifted away from Miitomo.

Why did it fail? Well, they botched the launch by capping the number of friends you could have and limiting how you could add them.

Reading others responses was a chore, and then they got rid of the points incentive to do so.
But just because I stopped using it doesn’t mean I’m not a little sad about it going away forever.
I guess I just liked know it was still there. And holding onto the hope that it might one day be improved.
It might be strange to say, but you helped me get through some rough times, Samus.
I’ll never forget you. Farewell.
