1: Potential customer says they might buy the product in a year if we had a feature they want first
vs
2: Potential customer is signing a paid deal now, and they'll pay us more if we add the feature they want

If we just look at this, #2 feature is getting prioritized
In going on three years of business, we've learned the hard way that "add this and then I'll think about buying it" is pretty much worthless.

If a customer cares- in a way that helps us be a sustainable business- they'll offer $ for it or a concrete contract that leads to $
I recognize that a lot of early businesses can't get a #2 option. In that case I encourage you to recognize that #1 has some value, but you don't *really* know until you get a real deal signed that will bring you money. Always aim for that, don't make any big bets till you get it
To give a real example, we're at a crossroads where we can choose to add higher quality formats or better cross-platform for web. Existing AAA game customers are pretty happy with existing formats. AAA leads into high quality formats are doing #1-- and web customers are doing #2
It frustrates me endlessly because I know & love the game industry and I know those customers are doing #1 out of ignorance. Whereas web customers are used to dealing with vendors, they know how it goes, they know money talks (#2).
We didn't add our current feature set for the game industry. Netflix bought it first, then a segment of the game industry ended up using it. Now it's the same story with our new feature push, except this time web might have different interests than games.
If you work for a game company, support middleware companies. ACTIVELY support middleware companies. You claim to be on the cutting edge, but you aren't an expert in everything, middleware is healthy for the ecosystem in many ways. If you want cutting-edge software, offer money!
Anyway, I'm personally rooting for adding higher quality formats because I really want to see games with better graphics, and hopefully *fingers crossed* I can work out some nice business deals so we can go that direction.
