The Bada Bagh is an impressive and beautiful area in honor of the Bhatti Dynasty of Rajput kings. There is a mesmerizing and interesting area in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, it is the Bada Bagh. which means a "big garden" , by the Maharaja Maharawal Jai Singh II, Batthi Dynasty.
The tank was to provide water, in the dry Thai desert, for the subjects of the Maharaja. A dam, and pillar were built too. After the tanks construction this patch of dry desert became a lush green oasis attracting animals too.
This was a beautiful flourishing area in contrast to the dry sands of the desert.

All the inhabitants that lived there were very pleased with the water tank, and the beautiful, and refreshing green oasis.
After the death of the Maharaja, on September 21, 1743, his son Lunakaran, as a means t honor his father, he built a chhatri, next to the green oasis, and water tank. Afterwards it became a tradition to build a cenotaph to honor the Bhatti Dynasty dead rulers and their families.
The beautiful garden was done to honor the Maharaja, Maharawal Jai Singh II, Lunakaran's father. The entrance to the Bada Bagh cenotaphs, is located on a small hill. The entry is from the bottom of the hill up, thus giving this area an air of mystery, and surrealism.
After the first row cenotaphs, there are many more cenotaphs, walking up the hill. Each cenotaph size, and carvings are according to the relevance and importance of each of the kings, queens and princes in this garden.
Each cenotaph is built on a marble slab, and carved from sandstone, there are inscriptions and name of each royal.

The dam's named Jait Bandh constructed from solid blocks of stone. There is also a pillar called Goverdhan, on the garden, or oasis.
This small hill, also overlooks a mango grove. The adding of chattris was stopped, because a prince died, of a mysterious disease, while another cenotaph was being built. This was taken as a bad omen, and the construction was stopped.
Some of the bases of the various chhatris, are either square or hexagonal, made of marbles, as mentioned. The domes of the cenitaphs, are of different shapes, some resemble a pyramids, others are square, and others round too..
There is a statue of a king on his horse, and the maharani standing next to him. This type of statue means including the maharani. the meaning is that the maharani committed sati right after the death of her husband, out of her love for him..
Other chattris are for the other wives of the kings, and other relatives. During all this time, the colors of these cenotaphs have not changed. There are some carvings, but no art decorations, like in other monuments.
At sunrise and sunset the view of Bada Bagh, is even more impressive and mystic. Another great place to visit.
