"The Writing Room is both my favorite & least favorite episode of #TheMagicians.
I loved how Julia is acknowledged by what she thinks is a God. Beautiful scene.
I love that many of the core group visit a place where the Chatwins kids lived briefly & witness a fairly cool haunting.
I hate the way they treat Kira, the disabled woman.

When they get in her mind, after writing a complex spell & playing Magical Negro, her character wants to die.
It makes no sense. She's free from seclusion due to her wheelchair.

Plus, as a Magician who can create complex spells, have people travel into her mind to visit her, or be able to get someone for her to teleport anywhere in the world.
"I'm allowed to be done."

I'm actually not against compassionate end of life provisions.

But I'm tired of this trope - "any disabled person using a wheelchair can't bear to live as they are, and wants to die." Ew.
Because of the way disabled people are discrimated against, mistreated and abused, anything that says to society that it's ok to kill us is a No.
And in this case, MAYBE if there was a separate multiple edisode arc about what her world is like being completely paralyzed?

I *might* be able to stretch myself into this "right to die" veil for tired ablesist thinking.
But in this episode, Kira is only present to advance Julia's storyline.

"Julia's been taught that she needs redemption and that sometimes killing isnecessary, for future storylines."
And writers everywhere? Especially in @JessicaJones & other @netflix shows?

Can you stop making all the window-dressing black actors either disposable or despicable?

Actors gotta act. But how about we fairly redistribute the evil.
(I'm too tired to go into it but I'll come back receipts when I write this as a full blown article.)
The writers on #TheMagicuans do a lot better with the recurring pivotal guest appearance of the marvelous @MarleeMatlin.

One of my fave actresses, who doesn't know how to be in a terrible film or show.
She presents as intelligent, complex and necessary.
And when her backstory is finally told we are immersed in her world in a clever way.
I really hope they continue to do better.

I hope they get another character who is disabled and that it's treated as a part of their world instead of something to be excised or destroyed.

Maybe there's a spell for that...
