Last night at a writerly thing someone was telling me about a talented friend who was struggling to get her fiction published. She remarked that she thought her friend (who is white) would have an easier time if she were a woman of color. READER, my jaw dropped. / thread
I know that this idea is out there but some old white dude ranting about it on Twitter is one thing, hearing a perfectly nice person say it out loud is quite another. Obviously I informed her that this was very much not the case and that the number of writers of color being
published right now is egregiously small and that the overwhelming whiteness of publishing is a huge problem. I just am so baffled by how this idea took hold. Do people think a couple of Oprah picks and some think pieces have suddenly not only solved the problem but in fact
imperiled the prospects of white writers? Publishing, we've really got to do better.
