See, here's the problem with some people I have seen trying to say "well actually Israel and Zionism and Judaism have no connection!"

They totally fucking do. This line is at best credulous, if well intentioned.
This doesn't mean that Jews worldwide are responsible for Israel, or that Israel is excused for what it does by dint of the Shoah.

But to act as if there is no connection, no link? It's absurd.
Israel does what it does because of their interpretation of the lessons of Jewish history, which do not teach kindness and compassion and trust in cosmopolitanism. And because of the lessons of Israeli history, which I feel this line is an attempt to ignore or shove under the rug
Like, there was this point, about... Let's say two or three decades ago. When the left collectively started acting as if Israeli history - the decades of terrorism, the multiple wars of attempted annihilation - was not a Thing any more. When they decided Hamas was trustworthy.
For decades beforehand the right of Israel to exist was basically a given. Despite the current revisionism of the BDS-influenced crowd, most of the well-known luminaries of social justice during the 20th century explicitly said Israel had a right to exist. This was normal.
And then, thanks to what I can only bluntly call a very calculated PR campaign, suddenly the consensus - critical of Israeli expansion and racism, yes, but accepting its existence - was reversed. Now Hamas and the PLO were no longer murderers, they were beautific freedom fighters
(I will idly comment here that it does not seem a coincidence that this corresponded with a growing indifference to antisemitism, and a growing complacent ignorance of the Shoah and its effects.)
Now neither Israeli as Heroes OR Palestine as Sainted Victims is true. These are stained and tarnished combatants with large populations who have grown up beset by hate and fear of each other, founded ion cycles of violence - because yes, bombardments and checkpoints are violence
Israel's blockade - no, not occupation, BLOCKADE, there are no Israelis in Gaza - is cruel violence. Hamas's constant bombardments and attempted murders are violence and terrorism. Nobody here is innocent. Nobody here feels safe.
But - now that I've done my ritual statements of culpability - the fact remains that Judaism is fundamental to the situation of Israel, and Israeli history cannot be understood absent a historical context that so many on the left are currently VERY anxious to silence.
Because it is not enough for Palestine's population to be cruelly oppressed. They must be saintly, innocent, ur-victims who lie at the center of every struggle for justice. And thus, the context must go.
Anyways. Why is this relevant?

Because the reason you hear, suddenly, these progressive voices so insistent that Israel be decoupled wholly from Judaism, despite Zionism being a dominant Jewish belief, is imo that they have despaired of that discussion entirely.
This is not the only reason. But I think it is *a* reason.

To put it bluntly, progressive Jews are writing off Israel because they recognize a losing PR battle when they see it and don't want to be collateral damage.
There are other reasons - a desire not to legitimize Netanyahu, a feeling that Israel's culture does not reflect the culture they are familiar with, a love of the diaspora.

But these are less elemental, I think, than the acceptance of being overmatched in PR
This goes against a profound and ancient sense of Jewish commonality. We are a community. We are raised to see ourselves as a community. This severing ties is *deeply* contradictory to Jewish history, and damaging given how large Israel looms in population, culture and heritage.
Consider then how frightened and bitter many such diaspora Jews must be to throw up their hands this way.
Again, as ever, this thread is not intended to pronounce Israel as Good or Necessary or whatever.
