A key project of @DataProgress will be using MRP to put reliable estimates of public opinion in the hands of advocates. Let me walk through why we think this is such an important project.
First, there is an increasingly strong literature suggesting that one reason policymakers don't pursue progressive policy is that they believe their constituents are more conservative than they are. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
Democratic party leaders believe that Americans are more conservative than they actually are, and believe that supporting progressive candidates will hurt them electorally. people.stanford.edu/dbroock/sites/…
However, there is evidence that providing politicians with public opinion data can shift their votes to be more in line with public opinion. sites.temple.edu/nickerson/file…
This is our first project, but we're currently working on generating estimates of support for Medicaid expansion in other states that have yet to expand Medicaid. Those will be released soon. If you want to support our work, you can contribute here: dataforprogress.org/support/
