Quick thread about an easily overlooked, small but telling example of the disparate impact of gentrification. It’s anecdotal but I suspect it’s not a fluke.
I just moved within Brooklyn from a mostly white ethnic fast-gentrifying neighborhood (South Slope) to a mostly West Indian fast-gentrifying neighborhood (Lefferts). Both neighborhoods are (were?) basically middle class and both have tons of new housing construction underway
Here’s the difference: in South Slope, even with a new apartment building going up on every block of 4th Ave and several on 5th, the sidewalk is *always* perfectly accessible. They do whatever it takes to avoid inconveniencing pedestrians. I assumed this would be true citywide
In Lefferts, however, I’ve seen multiple examples where the sidewalk just ends mid-block, with no signs offering advanced warning. You’re just suddenly compelled to cross in the middle of a busy street. It’s like they just assume no one who matters will complain.
Anyway, I guess I might as well take this opportunity to complain to @NYCMayor that pedestrians in Lefferts deserve the same basic consideration as pedestrians in his own beloved neighborhood, and shouldn’t have their safety jeopardized every day by private developers
Like this is honestly insulting. And the same exact thing is happening on the same side of the next block.
