In celebration of #WorldBookDay, a thread of books written by black female authors you should read:
Always Another Country by Sisonke Msimang
Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae. This book is insanely relatable, one of my favourite reads😍
The Way I see it by Lerato Tshabalala. If you want to read a black woman who doesn't care about being polite or meek, this one is for you: #WorldBookDay
Hearing Visions Seeing Voices by Mmatshilo Motsei. This book changed my life and my perspectives on spirituality and healing❤️
The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's wives by Lola Shoneyin. If you want to see how polygamy and the pressure to have children affects women, read this🙌🏿
Dawn by Octavia Butler. This was one of the first books to put a black woman front and centre in science fiction.
Une Si Longue Lettre (So Long a Letter) by Mariama Ba. This book goes deep what women endure in marriages, but also celebrates the beauty of female friendships.
Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga. It looks at race, gender and family life in a colonial context.
I know why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. A beautifully written autobiography, it really drives home the power of words and owning your own story.
