Want to teach not just a course but an ethos of the opposite of ‘officer safety first’ which I totally understand why it’s taught. And how by accepting more potential risks we might actually lower actual risks.
Not an easy sell, but I really think the ‘warrior mindset’ might be a good workout motivator in the gym but it’s terrible policing on the streets. Want to be a warrior? Join the military. Want to give rides to desperate people or listen to why (inset issue) matters? Be a cop
If someone wants to shoot me they are gonna shoot me. I can cut down the odds a lot w/ positioning & paying attention to body language but 90% of calls aren’t dangerous to me. So I play those odds. And try to keep the 90% from turning bad. I can’t treat every call like an ambush
We’ve gotten this .01% doctrine in which at any moment a random old lady can grab my gun or hit me with a chainsaw. So we stress stance & positioning over the reason we are there. I get it. I just think over the course of calls it adds more drama than takes away
So I get close to people. I mean close. I lean in. I talk softly. I don’t do it with out of control people bit holy god stop using the outliers to build standard operating procedure.
People ask me how I used to recruit hard core AQ true believers. The answer is I didn’t. I didn’t try. I spent my time with the vast majority that are rational. I apply that on the streets of my home town. I’m not right but it’s what I do.
I mean, seriously. My job isn’t that dangerous compared to a clerk in a store in a high crime area. Or a cab driver. And I’m not a baby. I’ve got backup. A lot of backup. And a literal Batman toolbelt. I love my job. It’s honorable. Doesn’t need to be relentlessly honored.
So just a month ago or so I used to block my caller ID when I called EVERY SINGLE CALL I WAS DISPATCHED ON BEFORE I GOT THERE, but I’ve come to see that doesn’t work.
I would never answer a blocked call and so why would I except others. Plus how can they reach out to me later. So I’ve just simply used my own cell to be in touch with my neighbors. And something cool as happened...
I’ve had four. FOUR. people call later to offer information about some neighborhood issues this month. Can’t do that with a blocked number. I need to be there with them. And feel their concerns, which are very real. Here, my old experiences really really really really help.
And I need to stress I’m a rookie in my job. I mean that. I learn stuff everyday as to why we do something a certain way or not. But I’m the Taliban of local cops. They’ve got the clocks but I’ve got the time. I live here. I’m gonna change a few things over these next decades
I’m so lucky to work for a smart department that de-escalates above all. They trained me. My goal is to add some stuff I think helps the beat cops as they talk to their neighbors. First thing is to make sure we see everyone as neighbors. We hunt criminals but not with dynamite
And when I say ‘beat cops’ I mean me and my friends. I would love (and will) teach detectives on interviews but I think my best value is helping my patrol mates shed their armor and build real beats
One thing I knew but now I really know is how local police is the most real police. I bet I put five people minimum a week in cuffs. And all the work it takes to avoid drama doing so or just dealing with the drama. I was a federal police once and understand that ain’t Police.
But feds get the awesome training & funding, which I accept. I had it. But the day to day grind is local and man could we use less rifles and MRAPS and embrace better roads, hospitals, & social services
