"The dominate culture's narrative is considered the universal experience. Although white women were oppressed as women they were privileged as White." - Dr. Robin DiAngelo #NowWatching livestream.com/nysaislive/adm…
"Racism is a structure, not an event....we talk about things in terms of being "nice" [or good people] instead of a structure...[further] racism affects different groups differently. Some groups are set up to succeed whereas others are not. " - Dr. DiAngelo
"There is something very anti-
Black about this culture...In the white mind, Black people are the ultimate racial other...Nothing turns the crank of white thought on Black people is that they are getting things that are undeserved." Dr. DiAngelo
"I need to get White people out of denial. If they are nice, and cool, and hip, and they get it then somehow they are not racist. That couldn't be further from the truth." - Dr. DiAngelo
"This is state-sanctioned- organized crime, really- against Blacks started in 1692 where it was legally able to murder Black people." Dr. DiAngelo
"There's no such thing as reverse-racism. White people have been able to do these things to Black people but Black people can't do this to white people. All people can have racial bias but that's not racism" Dr. DiAngelo
"This challenges the constant refrain that 'they are just as racist as we are' no they are not, they may be just as prejudice but can you blame them?" Dr. DiAngelo
"The segregated lives that white people live is not a fluke. It comes from decades of segregationist policies." Dr. DiAngelo
"The constant message that white people got was that we were all equal. But we weren't and you never questioned it. Start with where you live and why? The 1st message we got was that it was normal that we live apart. TBH, the whiteness is what makes a neighborhood." Dr. DiAngelo
"White space is: good, safe, nice, sheltered, clean, innocent, filled with hard-working people." Dr. DiAngelo
"Did you ever, when in graduate school, look up and see yourself reflected in the front of the room? Teachers are role models, holders of knowledge, guidance...our teaching force is primarily 83-93% white. Where are we getting our knowledge/information from? Dr. DiAngelo
Q: [for white people to answer] What are some of the ways that your race has shaped your life? (feel free to answer below) 😀
"There are scripts...We are products of our culture...there are two narratives that are common: colorblind and color celebrate. First, 'I was taught to treat everyone the same' That's impossible. People are not objective." Dr. DiAngelo
"And you don't want ot treat everyone the same because we all have different needs. [When I hear this] I get a thought bubble over my head, 'this person is not culturally aware'." - Dr. DiAngelo
"When people of color hear us say this they are not thinking, 'I'm dealing with a woke white person right now!' Most POCs eye-roll at this." - Dr. DiAngelo
"Children may be born innocent but by age 3 they understand that being White is better and that is the preferred group. 'I'm not racist because I wasn't raised racist.' or 'I am not racist because my parents were racist'. Either way, race is pervasive in society." Dr. DiAngelo
"Notice how often white people use proximity to distance themselves from racism. 'I'm not racist! I'm from (New York,Hawaii, other liberal state)'. White people present evidence to prove that they are not racist." Dr. DiAngelo
"Apparently a racist couldn't have a POC colleague in a cubicle 3 doors down from them [making the paralell that proximity does not absolve on from being racist]." - Dr. DiAngelo
"Even card-carrying racists can do these things (live in or proximity to POCs and still have racist patterns)." - Dr. DiAngelo
"These are all race- celebrate statements, "diversity is great! It's awesome" but it still protects whiteness and allows white people to benefit from it but it doesn't challenge the status quo." - Dr. DiAngelo
Exercise: How do you [white people] connect with Black people and try to prove that you are cool? White people, start all of your sentences with "I..." Black people (and POCS), listen to their stories and take note. How do these make you feel? Does it endear them to you?
"Mention music that you like...a book that you are reading or a movie that you watched? You may have done those things but you have to separate yourself from "those difficult white people" - Dr. DiAngelo
"Which actually makes Black people feel racialized and exoticised. Show me that you're different, you don't have to tell me..." Dr. DiAngelo
"Whiteness mean that you belong. You don't have to question your place in the world"

Exercise: As an admissions counselor, how does race influence your decisions or your practice as a professional? (for those reading this, how does race affect your professional practice?)
"I was racially affirmed in my childhood. I grew up in poverty. Homelessness, foster care, etc. I didn't go to college until my 30's. But *scoffs* I always knew that I was White and I always knew that made me better." Dr. DiAngelo
"I just learned my class position in the racial hierarchy differently than a middle-class white woman but it doesn't absolve me of my racism because I grew up poor." Dr. DiAngelo
Now, I am sitting at those tables [of power] and whoo! Academia is so racist. If you want to get ahead in academia, never mention racism. I would collude with others in their racism. Whenever a candidate of color came up the question of "a good fit" would come up.- Dr. DiAngelo
College education is not about intelligence but class positionality. - Dr. DiAngelo
The popular shows of the 90's that show us what friendship and love should be like all happen in NYC (Friends, Gilmore Girls, and Seinfeld). Even amongst diversity there is not value that the ideal life is white! - Dr. DiAngelo
There is not inherent value in the perspectives and values of people of color! That I could be allowed to lead a major corporation with no understanding or racial heirarchies or literacy and I could be seen as qualified! Dr. DiAngelo
I could live and die in racial segregation and my life would be better because an all-white life is a good life. My psycho-social development was inculcated in this sociology. Dr. DiAngelo
This is also the water from which whiteness says 'I will be the judge if something is racist or not' - Dr. DiAngelo
Q: How does the whiteness manifest in your work? (And don't say that it doesn't because it does. Explore that.) - Dr. DiAngelo
"Most white people respond to individual incidences versus seeing the patterns. As admissions counselors, we want to put more Blacks into the college environment but I believe the biggest detriment to Blacks is unexamined whiteness. - Dr. DiAngelo
We just keep putting Black people into these environments and wondering why they won't survive. - Dr. DiAngelo
Colleges use foreign Ss to fulfill diversity quotas.I think colleges are more comfortable with foreign students and African immigrants than AA Ss because we don't carry our histories in our bodies. - Dr. DiAngelo
"Fit is used for codes as "comfortable for whites". - Dr. DiAngelo
The default of our society is the reproduction of racial inequality. All our system depends on to keep on keeping on is keep being nice. Niceness is not courageous and will not get racism on the table. It take courage to break with White solidarity - Dr. DiAngelo
Whiteness allows white people to live in a very insular environment. As a white person, I've never had to bare witness to the pain perpetrated on POC as a result of racism. Nor have I ever had to experience the pain or discomfort of talking about racism. - Dr. DiAngelo
White fragility is actually a form of racial bullying! I'm going to make it so uncomfortable for you to talk about race that you stay in your place &I stay in mine & you get to be my diversity hire. You will sit on every committee- although we won't pay your more. - Dr. DiAngelo
I'm not a part of the 1%, I've never even been a manager but in this way I can control the POCs in my orbit and keep them in line. I maintain the status quo and enact racism by doing this - Dr. DiAngelo
In homogeniety, do we not strategize to get more "diversity" in our ranks? How can you help them see their sexism as the only woman? These ppl have had a lifetime of being the smartest in the room and see nothing of value missing from the room. We live in patriarchy. Dr. DiAngelo
Although they would deny it, if you brought up they would rebuff you, "my wife rules the home" At the end of 2 weeks you would probably have a long list of their sexism. Do you think your feedback would be well received? Would you be tired and closed off? - Dr. DiAngelo
So, they decide they need some sexism training and they get a male trainer. He is hitting all the points and you think, 'he's got my back' so you open up and share your experiences. And there is silence in the group, taken as hostility. - Dr. DiAngelo
Later, a colleague comes to you and says, "hey! I didn't get it before but when you shared your experiences you helped me see my sexism". Now (as a woman) I think, 'that's my ally. They get it!' - Dr. DiAngelo
So, I ask, why didn't you have my back during the meeting? That new ally says, 'well, I didn't feel comfortable. I was scared.' No, you didn't want to break with white male solidarity but you still want to be cool with them - Dr. DiAngelo
White women are the worst purveyors of White supremacy and do not stand with Black women in solidarity because they feel like 'at least I have a way in'" - Dr. DiAngelo
What in your life has allowed you to be a full fledged college-educated adult who has a job but you don't have racial literacy? In an era where there is so much information & access that you haven't taken the initiative to find out. Google it! That's white apathy! - Dr. DiAngelo
