I've seen a lot of statements from bigots along the lines of "white nationalism isn't white supremacy," or "what's wrong with celebrating European culture and heritage?," etc. They hide behind such rhetoric to oppose immigration and multiculturalism, and be general a-holes. 1/
I'm a Classics professor. I teach and publish on Athenian democracy, ancient warfare, Homer's Iliad, Greek ideas of freedom, war monuments ancient and modern, and so on. I also teach the Western Civ survey, and have taught the rise of Christianity. I know Europe and the West. 2/
You know how I know that all these "Western chauvinists" and "Euro-Canadian" activists are nothing but ignorant and frightened racists who hate non-white people? Because *they neither know nor understand nor practice the "heritage" they claim to defend.* 3/
Without exception, none of the Faith Goldys or Lauren Southerns or Gavin McInneses or Charles Murrays, etc. know what the heck they're talking about. All that's left is bigotry and racism, pure and simple. These are all just gross and ignorant white supremacists. 4/
Let's take Faith Goldy. She claims to be a "Catholic nationalist for Christ the King and country." This position is self-contradictory on its face, given that Christ and Christians was some of the original multiculturalists. 5/
Also, the crusader imagery she loves to push (crosses, "deus vult") neglects to mention that the crusaders were just as happy to slaughter Goldy's eastern European ancestors as they were to kill Muslims. Christ the King and country indeed. 6/
How about Southern? She's now in Europe with "Defend Europe," trying to prevent "illegals" from crossing the Alps. First of all, what a vile wretch of a person who goes to other countries to intimidate desperate people. Screw her and her supporters. 7/
Second, she wears shirts with references to the Battle of Tours/Poitiers, seemingly oblivious to the fact that her northern European ancestors, the ones who fought at Tours, *were* the barbarians that invaded and destabilized the "classical" Greco-Roman world. 8/
I'm gonna pass over McInnes, b/c, well, the Proud Boys are such pathetic wankers that anyone who follows them must be beyond my help. Seriously. Wankers. 9/
Let's end with Charles Murray. I've already had threads about his pushing of racial IQ theories, so let's consider his other work, esp. "Human Achievement." This book celebrates "significant figures" throughout history, the vast majority of whom are the usual suspects. 10/
He actually has a graph charting "significant figures" by region, "proving" that the majority are from the "West." A) Gentle reader, this is such rank circular reasoning that it should fool no one. Figures are "significant" b/c Murray has heard of them. B) Come on!
Finally, just look at the feeds and followers of these types and ask yourself: if *this* represents "Western Civilization" (it doesn't), do I want any part of it? So, yes, they're nothing but a bunch of ignorant, knuckle-dragging, hateful bigots. Tell 'em to stfu. 12/12
For some more context, here's a picture of the Temple of Apollo in Corinth, taken in 2008 from a spot near the Frankish farmhouse I was helping to excavate. Why is there a Frankish farmhouse in the Greek Peloponnese, you ask? Well...
After the Crusaders sacked Constantinople (that's right, a *Christian* city, albeit Orthodox) with great slaughter in the 4th Crusade, the Franks took over the Peloponnese (which they called the Morea), and ruled this Orthodox Christian area as Catholic conquerors.
So when you see "Catholic nationalists" and white supremacists throwing around "Deus Vult" to celebrate the Crusades, remember that the Crusaders were murderous louts to fellow Christians too, including those that lived in the *still thriving Roman Empire* in the East.
Don't miss the irony of white nationalists throwing around slogans that celebrate the barbaric western European slaughter of Christians still living in the very "cradle of the West" these folks so idolize. My motto: "Deus vult ut Fides taceat." Bonus points for translating.
