Absolutely true story about Mo Brooks that totally explains how someone as dumb as a pile of rocks got elected to Congress. Thread 1/9.

I have talked to Mo Brooks at length and also with his supporters. The anecdote I heard most often from Republican organizers in 2010, the year he got elected on the Tea Party wave, was from his days on the Madison county commission.

IIRC the county garbage collection fee was due for a $3/month raise.

Mo Brooks found this intolerable, demanded justification, held up passage to demagogue a $36/year fee hike at a time the entire garbage business was transitioning to wheeled bins.
After much effort, Mo Brooks succeeded in lowering the rate increase to...

...$2.50/month.

More than one of his adoring volunteers cited this story to me as an example of his commitment to conservative, small-government values.

He had saved them $6/year.
If you truly believe that taxation is theft, and that said theft benefits people who do not share your values and are not like you, then it does not matter what the tax is, or what it supports.

Mo Brooks has pandered to this visceral hatred every time I've seen him talk.
In his 2010 campaign, Mo Brooks would discuss immigration with everyone he met.

When speaking, he would always mention how everyone he met wanted to talk about immigrants.

He was hardly the only Republican running on an anti-immigration platform.

The AL GOP made hurting immigrants their first priority in the 2011 session with HB 56, the "Alabama Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act."

Because God forbid we pay a farthing to collect the garbage of any undocumented immigrants. Thieves!

Mo Brooks is exactly the sort of person who, presented with overwhelming evidence of shrinking ice and rising temperatures, demands that we count the rocks falling in the sea before we draw any conclusions that might lead us to spend a thin dime on solutions.
Madison county residents resented the new presence of immigrant communities and envied their success. The whole world had come to take all the jobs and food stamps and health care and free garbage collection.

Global? Warming? Pah! Down with both.
