Mentioned in passing during the live show tonight that the Chicago Police Dept ran a black site where they disappeared people and afterwards a Black CPD sergeant came up to me and said that wasn’t true and that we should debate it

First: no.
Second: theguardian.com/us-news/2015/f… Just looked him up on the @ChicagoReporter police misconduct settlement database and sure enough: the city settled a lawsuit in which the aforementioned sergeant beat up a Black man at a store for no reason and planted drugs on the man to justify the arrest

of course he did.

Have you ever heard of SLABS? I hadn’t until last night.

it stands for Student Loan Asset-Backed Securities. it’s exactly what it sounds like:

was talking to my gym partner who is moving in with her girlfriend and man. listening to her, i forget how much of healthy cohabitation, especially the early parts, is just overcommunicating. about every. single. fucking. thing. let's say you say you both want a clean house. okay, that's dope!

but y'all are different people. something like "clean" means v different things — even for people who are objectively very clean people! does that mean a deep clean every Sunday? is everyday laundry day? etc

if you read enough discoursing about crime and policing in big cities #onhere, you'll see lots of people point out that crime is at or near historic lows, and that year-over-year crime jumps are relative to those troughs. then you'll almost always see someone say in response that bloodless stats are missing the point: who cares what the numbers are if people don't *feel* safer?

sigh.

If you're talking abt Kobe's Black Mamba persona or the hashtag GirlDad memorializing that greeted his death, you're REALLY talking abt a branding switch necessitated by his rape case; league/fan investment in that rebrand was/is so strong that it inflates his greatness imma mute this bc it's Friday but: one example is Kobe's reputation as clutch, which is wildly disconnected from his actual iffy production. But if you say that, people will invite you to Temecula as if the numbers ain't right there.

meh. There are always lots of reporting into the finances of high-profile non-profits. And this reel ignores the fact that for YEARS, it's been organizers/former organizers from BLM chapters that have been pushing for more re: financial transparency

bit.ly/371UeKR as one example: an investigative report about the financial/logistical mismanagement at the American Red Cross following Hurricane Sandy. (You can actually pick any major natural disaster in the US over the last two decades and find reporting abt the ARC)

Between @MF_Greatest’s live-tweeting of Will Smith’s memoir and that person getting ate up over her latest take…it feels kinda like…damn, these people are really out here rich + famous and *miserable.* Also, just from what Maya was relating from that memoir, that slap at the Oscar…uh, hits different. 😬

That man takes himself v seriously. I mean, that’s obvious — peep the self-aggrandizing “protector” acceptance speech — but it has poisoned his relationships w/ his wife kids

This family didn’t make a lot of noise about their teenage son being killed by the police in broad daylight because they were friendly with people on the force and some family members had been local officials themselves. They trusted that justice would be done. The police don’t suddenly have mechanisms for accountability in place when their actions hurt the “wrong” people, tho — like in this case, where the teenager who was shot to death was white and came from a police-supporting family.

Someone shared a Planet Money ep that starts with an anecdote: a veteran locksmith fixes a thing in two mins that would have taken an apprentice locksmith — or someone who wasn’t a locksmith — hours to do. But the customer is like, “I ain’t paying you $200 for this little job.” When i first got to NPR, i had to shadow the folx on All Things Considered. I watched w/ growing panic as Theo Balcomb calmly made cuts to a taped piece at 4:29 pm that was going out onto national radio at 4:35.

there’s a lot of work involved for this stuff to sound effortless

Someone close to me tested positive for COVID after a colleague of theirs who refuses to get vaccinated tested positive. That colleague works with children — when their parents find out said colleague is not vaxxed, it’s going to get ugly. Now everybody’s lives are up in the air: arranging for childcare while quarantining, contacting everyone *they’ve* been in contact with who might have to make similar arrangements.

Bc we’re so bad abt thinking about class in the US, all the “Trump won non-college educated whites” post-mortems took that to mean his base was poor + working-class white folx and not, like, the dude who clears six figures + owns the car dealership or has a small contracting biz His rise wasn’t fueled by the Tim Rigginses and their brothers. It was fueled by the Buddy Garritys.

the wild part is that nothing about this freakout over curricula is novel. In the 1930s, there was a organized campaign by conservative activists against a set of widely used textbooks bc they acknowledged things like the existence of racism in US history and wealth inequality. At one point, a powerful advertising lobby group got in on the controversy, taking issue with those social studies textbooks bc one included the phrase “advertising costs were passed on to the consumer.”

They said it disparaged USian marketing.

Never heard of LulaRoe until v recently. There’s a LOT of race stuff in MLMs. (the way i heard target sellers described was “Mormons, [stay at home] moms, and minorities”: people with tight, cooperative social networks + constrained avenues to lucrative employment/compensation This doc shows just how white the LulaRoe universe is. But that makes sense, right? These are Mormon and evangelical stay-at-home moms who are pumping their friend and family circles for sales. Even at five or six degrees removed, how many WOC are they likely to *know*?

#housingsegregationineverything this is a wild dynamic that shows up in so many of these testing studies re: housing discrimination. In these cases, "testers" pretend to be looking for a home or a house to rent, and the property managers are often *nice* to the tester they have no intention of ever renting to.

and this drop is true of nearly every big city in the US – homicide and violent crime rates have PLUMMETED over the last two decades, and at or near record lows in some places. but if you watch local news (or read Nextdoor) you might think it's Mad Max out here. as @loisbeckett said, when the baseline is that low, any small increase in violent crime can look like a spike year over year.

it's a very politically useful innumeracy — hard to make an argument for rethinking budget priorities around, say, policing if crime is "skyrocketing."

Trae is very good but looking at the numbers, it’s not clear *how*

He’s a volume shooter who is a below average three-point shooter with an elite floater game

Steph Curry is the comp we always hear but honestly Tony Parker (if he shot 7 3PT FG attempts a game) might be better (Of course, Tony never shot nearly as much and Trae is a much better passer/ballhandler than Tony)

Was listening to Sam Anderson and Zach Lowe talk about how we’ve never seen KD — easily one of the most talented players ever — have to really enter the Avatar State in his career. He’s never had to go full Harden, touch-the-ball every possession.

We might be about to, though. My next door neighbor is a DC dude who played professionally overseas. We were having this long convo the other day about how hard it is to place KD (who he coached against in AAU).

He might be the most complete player ever, but no one considers him the greatest. It’s weird.

this is probably less binary than we frame it.

Steph is obviously a tremendously skilled shooter, but a good deal of what makes him deadly is his reaction time and spatial awareness. It’s not run-jump athleticism, but it’s also not “teachable” either. Also, like... we associate good shot-blocking with vertical leaps but most of the best are constantly timing their jumps and watching angles. Tim Duncan is a great example.

It’s a lot more skill-based than we appreciate.
