What really shook them was when young white folk got woke for George Floyd. Want to know why Republicans obsess over fighting “wokeness” (AKA empathy), banning books, dumbing down and limiting the scope of education and halting attempts at freeing people from the yoke of college debt? Because they are losing control of college educated white voters. Especially college educated white women and collegiate voters under 30. And since they have chosen to limit their political strategy to maximizing non college, rural and evangelical white turnout, making college educated white voters rarer or more right wing is crucial to them.

I think Twitter is a good news aggregator and useful for journalists and writers and thoughtful people to communicate ideas. There’s also a lot of laughs here and great content (hello, #blacktwitter!) It’s also a hellscape of trolling and foolishness. Musk Twitter will be worse. Especially on the disinformation front, given his affinity for Putin and vow to reinstate Trump. I don’t plan to delete my account but I certainly will be on here a lot less and focus on other social media outlets. (You can find me on Tiktok at @msnbcjoy & IG at @JoyAnnReid.)

Last night in Fort Worth after a long time posing for selfies and chatting with people (Fort Worth folks are truly some of the nicest people ever! Even had a lovely convo with a tatted, right wing union guy) a woman walked up to me as my producers and I were getting in our SUV… She was very Texas: pretty, tall and blonde. Security was literally about to put us in our ride when she walked up and very politely asked if it was too late to take a selfie. I said let’s selfie! Then what she said next stopped me, my executive producer Tina and my AP Kam, cold.

Watching a screener of the movie “Till” in preparation for the show tomorrow. And I’m shaken all over again by the absolute state of terrorism that Black folks lived in, in the American South up to not very long along ago. Some things in U.S. history just shock the conscience. Emmett Till was a year younger than the late, great John Lewis. He would be 81 today. My godmother just turned 89.

If you don’t think this SCOTUS majority will kill the Voting Rights Act, return colleges to pre-1960s demographics and solicit cases allowing them to pull a Dobbs on the right to contraception, LGBTQ access to public accommodations and same sex marriage you’re kidding yourself. These right wing justices are not jurists, they’re an extension of far right Republican politics. And they’re going to take steps to repeal the 20th Century, just because they can. The war is against modernity, and taking away women’s bodily autonomy was just the start.

I honestly cannot believe that in the year of our lord 2022, in the 21st damn century, we are watching a state vote on whether women’s bodies and wombs belong to their state. Unbelievable. No one would believe this is a modern country If you explained the shite happening here. Can you imagine in 1865 if instead of a war, the U.S. had held a state-by-state vote on race-based slavery? Oh wait … I actually could imagine that. And much like today, such a vote would have been severely restricted, to ensure the “right” outcome for wealthy planters.

Something to seriously keep in mind come November. Control of state legislatures is literally control of every aspect of your rights and freedom. Heads up especially for women, POC and LGBTQ folks, and anyone who wants social security, Medicare and Medicaid to keep existing… Republicans have mused over the years about constitutional amendments:
-banning same sex marriage and abortion
-requiring a balanced federal budget, which would trigger automatic, catastrophic cuts to the entire social safety net
And who knows what else the MAGAs would think up.

This is literally the only path to passing everything from voting rights to women's rights to limiting the damage the SCOTUS is doing to this country by adding more justices and finally taking action on the climate crisis. 50 Senators is NOT enough-gives 2 of them too much power. Voting is not a one shot deal. It's a systematic plan you implement over & over again until you get what you want. That's what the far right did. For 50 YEARS. But to fix their damage you don't need 50 more. A lot can be done in the next TWO. Then you vote to defend what you won.

Bottom line: women are not free and full citizens in America under the 12th-18th century laws we have been bound to by the “originalists.” The rights of women, racial and sexual minorities, including our right to vote and to privacy, exist at the whims of our respective states. And then to make it extra spicy, these same “originalists” have decreed that our states have the power to discriminate against us as voters or as humans (when it comes to sex and pregnancy and commerce) any way they choose to, as long as they don’t explicitly say “race.”

The only policies Trump enacted were that massive tax cut that went 80% to the rich and took away blue state property tax deductions and installing far right judges including the 3 on SCOTUS who ended Roe. When Republicans say “but I liked his policies” that’s what they mean. Besides that, his only other accomplishments as president were stripping off the phony veneer of “compassionate conservatism” so Republicans could drop political correctness and stealing 1,000 migrant kids and banning Muslim grannies to placate anti-immigrant hysteria.

I honestly think Mr Hoppe dod us a service. He finally answered the question: what are these “policies” Republicans like when they claim they don’t like Trump’s behavior but would vote for him again: tax cuts for the rich and far right judges…the two things Trump actually did. The 3rd thing Trump did was finally free Republicans from the bonds of political correctness. They no longer have to pretend to be compassionate conservatives or to believe POC should have the right to vote or immigrants matter or that they care if giving birth destroys a child.
