Francis Drake was a slave trader and a pirate.

He burned churches, tortured prisoners & executed a member of his own crew on spurious grounds. He orchestrated the massacre on Rathlin Island that saw children and women butchered.

Drake's reputation is built on posthumous myth making and the Victorians latching onto him as a "swashbuckling, sea faring hero". He was a braggart and a violent slave trader who slaughtered people of these islands too in the most appalling circumstances.

Today marks 83rd anniversary of a ship called HMT Dunera, setting sail from Liverpool. Its crew and passengers numbered some 2,600 boys and men (aged 14-60) - and were mostly German and Austrian refugees. The ship had a capacity for 1,600 and was dangerously over capacity 1/6

Widespread fear in Britain in 1940 about fifth columnists had led to thousands of refugees being classed as "enemy aliens" but in fact the majority of those men on board roughly 2/3rds were German and Austrian Jews who had fled the Nazis. Some had been in concentration camps 2/6

This dreadful AI image of Abbey Road has reminded me of my favourite Abbey Road story... no, not the hoary old conspiracy theory about the cover (which incidentally features in my current book) but the "guy in the background" - whose name was Paul Cole

Cole was an American - on holiday with his wife and sick of visiting art galleries and museums. So instead, in August 1969, was wandering down Abbey Road when he spotted a group of policemen and started engaging them in conversation.
