Though a number of doctoral candidates are required by their programs to publish articles out of their dissertation or to build it as a series of articles, others ask for more of a book-manuscript-style thesis.
Regardless, I always ask my students to think of their dissertations as packages of three (see my Dissertation Analytical Table, DAT model).
I assume that most PhD dissertations will have three contributions (theoretical, empirical, or both types).

Recently, @DSlakoffPhD tweeted that she wanted to read more. I assumed her request was less on scholarly books and more on "how to academia/how to write/how to manage projects" books, so in the spirit of #2020Goals, here are a few suggestions I can give.
Before I start writing this list, here are the rules of engagement:
1). This is my list. I do not accept anybody telling me "you should add X book to your list'. You can make your own recommendations.

3). I may (and actually do) like many of the books' authors, but I don't owe them anything (as I don't owe anyone anything, to be 100% honest). So, I'm suggesting that you read them not because I get any financial kickback or anything of that sort, I just liked reading them.
#ScholarSunday was a couple of days ago, but I've been having health issues so I hadn't promoted or commented on people you may want to follow or should follow. There's a metric ton of those folks, but I want to highlight people who provide resources for the PhD experience.
Before I met @tanyaboza in real life, I read her blog, "Get a Life, PhD" getalifephd.blogspot.com (Tanya is someone I consider a good friend since we both study Latin American issues and we see each other at LASA, usually). Her blog reminded me I could be a prof AND have a life.
One of the first people I saw unmasking and unveiling the #HiddenCurriculum that seems to elude new scholars who get into the PhD was @JessicaCalarco whose expertise in ethnography and qualitative methods complements her kindness and interest in improving students' experience.
Micro-thread on "dealing with The Dreaded Blank Page". I have been wanting to write a thread and a blog post on this topic for a very long time. When one of my PhD students told me "Dr. Pacheco-Vega, I don't know how to START a paper", I literally froze. I was like "BUT WHY?"
