That’s how the average person can help. But what about the people in news media with power? They are silent #16DaysofActivism
Earlier this year I called on the most protected and powerful in journalism to speak out publicly for us—white men and white women—and most of them ignored me and refused. Yet these are the same ppl who will talk about #GBV on Dec 6 as though this isn’t ongoing in their backyard
These voices are those you see on Tv regularly. Many of those white men denied and discredited our experiences like a certain @CBCNews Parliamentary reporter who said that “the PM gets more hate”. I have yet to see any repudiation by management. JSP doesn’t exist for them

#OrangeTheWorld - A thread on reproductive control, coercion and entrapment 🧵

As a #trapped populations scholar, I have lately spent a lot of time thinking about reproductive #coercion, #control and #entrapment. (i)
The #familycourts appear to fail to understand, acknowledge and interrupt these dynamics of #coercivecontrol in their current system. (ii)
Many perpetrators of #coercivecontrol will already begin to put pressure on or introduce the idea of a child during the early love bombing phase. (iii)

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today and remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it. Image
In general terms, it manifests itself in physical, sexual and psychological forms, encompassing:

- intimate partner violence (battering, psychological abuse, marital rape, femicide);
- sexual violence and harassment (rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual advances,...
...child sexual abuse, forced marriage, street harassment, stalking, cyber- harassment);
- human trafficking (slavery, sexual exploitation);
- female genital mutilation; and
- child marriage

Take a stand, speak out and report violence against women and girls!

1/ I saw levels trending, when I followed the story, I was heartbroken. Revenge porn is a tool of emotional destruction & abuse. Shashi be strong & take legal action. My advise to young people is to stop recording intimate moments & sending nude pictures to partners. #16Days
2/ Shashi has been strong & told her side of the story. I can relate with the pain she is going through. A lot of women go through similar cases of abuse especially when they want to end an abusive relationship. They are stalked, emotionally & physically abused #16DaysOfActivism
3/ It is even worse when the woman has got a public profile, they get threatened on how their public profiles will be tarnished, if there are sextapes on how they will be exposed, if a politician how they are going to be painted black, etc. Women are always at the losing end.

It's the start of #16DaysOfActivism - a global campaign to end gender-based violence.

The #GE15 manifestos had 3 proposals on gender-based violence.

In conjunction with #16Days, the govt can commit to adopting these proposals right away.

Some recommendations:👇
(1) Enact the anti-stalking law #MakeStalkingACrime

This was in PN's manifesto, but all coalitions would agree. Dewan Rakyat already passed the Bill, but not the Senate.

Govt could commit to: A) pass the Bill as is; or B) improve the Bill (wao.org.my/tabling-of-law…) then pass it
(2) Implement the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act

BN and PN both committed to this. PH surely agrees. As the Act is already law, the government has to implement it.

The question is, what can the government do right away, to ensure successful implementation?

@ManduReid's leadership has will sadly become knownfor dismissing expertise & the majority view of Party members on self ID.

The Party's assembly was clear in its support of single-sex spaces, yet #wep #groundhogday brings back the same tired motion that was rejected previously
@ManduReid This week Reem Alsalem, the UN #VAWG rapporteur wrote to Hollyrood to intervene on similar self ID policies (#GRRBill).

It is unacceptable to WEP party members that her voice, alongside ours, should be dismissed.
@WEP_UK #IDEVAW2022 #16DaysofActivism

The Party bought a self ID motion that was rejected until the membership was consulted (thank you Sophie Walker).

The Party stalled for years, and when a version of a consultation was conducted it rejected self ID.

Violence against women & girls is the most pervasive human rights violation worldwide.

More than 5 women/girls are killed by family EVERY HOUR.

Tomorrow is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, & is the start of the 16 Days of Activism.

#IDEVAW2022
While women can indeed be agents of patriarchy, and participate in this violence, the vast, vast majority of violence against women is perpetrated by men. This is why many feminists insist on calling it “MVAWG”: male violence against women and girls. macleans.ca/opinion/lets-f…
“Violence against women” sounds like a passive phenomenon that happens out of the aether. Even worse, “gender-based violence” doesn’t even name the group affected—women. “Male violence against women and girls” names the problem and those affected.

The focus of #16DaysofActivism2021 to End Gender-Based Violence is femicide: the killing of a woman or a girl by a man because of her gender, sometimes also used to refer to the epidemic of women killed by men in intimate settings 16dayscampaign.org/wp-content/upl… feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-te…
If terrorism means politically-motivated violence intended to scare us into changing the way we behave, then surely femicide is terrorism. Patriarchy is the ideology; cis men are the terrorists.

#16Days
Unless we impose on societal consciousness just how quotidian violence against women is and how it is ordinary men who commit it, it will continue to benefit ordinary men. It does.

Say it. Violence against women is everyday; ordinary men commit it.

When we hear the word "Slavery" the first thing that comes to our mind is slavery back in the days of our forefathers and before our countries achieved independence.

Slavery, however, didn't end with those times. It's still practised in modern forms and styles.

A thread.
Although modern slavery isn't defined in law, it is hidden under different forms like:

1. Forced & early marriage
2. Forced labour
3. Human trafficking
4. Debt bondage
5. Slavery of children

These are some of the major forms of slavery practised worldwide.
According to the  International Labour Organisation @ilo (ILO) more than 40 million people worldwide are victims of modern slavery.

- 1 in 4 of them are children.
- Almost three quarters (71%) are women and girls.

Yesterday marked the first day of #16DaysOfActivism. And for the full 24 hours, I went silent on social media in solidarity with @standardbanksa’s #HearHerVoice initiative, which is intended to raise awareness of the silencing of survivors of GBV+F.
In my own experience as a survivor of rape, I know how devastating and crippling silence can be - the silence of those you finally find the strength to tell your story; the silence fuelled by fear; the silence from those who are meant to serve and protect.
The time for silence is over. We don't need to raise awareness - who can say they aren't aware of the devastating reality we face with regards to GBV+F in SA? We need accountability. We need action. We need interventions that actually make a difference. & we need all of that NOW.

Lockdown reimposed in England. People can leave home "to escape domestic abuse.”
-What fucking world is this where men still beat & kill us even during pandemic?
-How long must we wait until men stop beating & murdering us,even under lockdown?
🎥 @rerutled
I made the above in May. Earlier during the pandemic, isolation and lockdown conditions exacerbated barriers to escape for victims of domestic violence in the UK and many other countries. google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.…
Where’s the vaccine vs patriarchy? Unsurprising spike in intimate partner terrorism during lockdowns is the other global pandemic many are happy to ignore.

Women, children, queer people are being terrorized at home. Home is where the hurt is.

I am honoured to join my sisters and comrades in @egnalegna in their call to #AbolishKafala. Egna Legna is a collective of Ethiopian domestic workers based in #Lebanon who advocate for the rights and dignity of other domestic workers. I send them my love and solidarity.
The Kafala system entraps migrant workers in Lebanon and the Gulf in contracts that bind them to their employers and creates conditions of enslavement which leave them susceptible to violence and abuse. #AbolishKafala
There are at least 250,000 migrant workers, mostly women from Africa and Asia, who work in Lebanon as housekeepers, carers or nannies. The economic crisis, #COVID19 pandemic, and the Beirut Port explosion have all compounded the already hellish conditions for them.

'China renamed Rosa – From childhood sold five times'

The life of China, called by at least three names and sold five times, illustrates how impossible it was for a slave to hold onto even the most basic unit of identity. China of Singaracolla was sold into slavery as a child.
Six years later, ‘China, renamed Rosa’ was sold for 18 pagados, to a VOC sailor, Hendrik Hillman. A month after this, now recorded as ‘Rosa’, she was sold at a 100 percent profit to a Dutch ship’s captain, Cornelius Bosch.
He set sail five months later on the Bovenkerker Polder bound for Cape Town and took her with him.
The final record of sale was in 1775, when China was 16 or 17; she was bought by the most senior clergyman of the Cape, Johannes Serrurier.

30 years ago, a man walked into École Polytechnique and killed 14 women. As an engineering student many years later, we were taught about the tragedy, but as I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize that my initial understanding was inadequate. 🧵
One man may have committed the act, but make no mistake: misogyny killed these women. Patriarchy killed these women. The belief that a woman could have the audacity to move beyond the confines of traditional gender roles killed these women.
This was not just one angry man. This was an inevitable byproduct of a system. Even now, there is an entire online radicalization pipeline ready to tell confused or angry boys and men that it’s the women’s fault. They’re the ones you should hate.

On Dec. 6th, 1989, a man murdered 14 women at Ecole Polytechnique,a Montréal engineering school. Remember the #MontrealMassacre. Femicide - the murder of women for being women - hasn’t been eradicated in Canada/globally. I made this in April 🎥 @rerutled
What fucking world is this:
- where men still beat and kill us even during a pandemic
- how long must we wait until men stop beating and murdering us, even under #COVID19 lockdown?
Domestic abuse kills and hurts millions.

Where is the vaccine against THAT global epidemic? Where is the vaccine against patriarchy?

@BitiTendai is supposedly a national leader as VP of MDCA, a Christian and lawyer but the way he behaved is NOT acceptable.
He shouted at me, called me “stupid very stupid” several time’s and made me feel intimidated, belittled and publicly humiliated.
@BitiTendai violated my rights as a woman. He violently pointed his fingers at my face and threatened me. To put this into context neither me nor my company had any prior dealings with this man, we have never spoken to him and yet his behavior was irrational, hysterical...
