Stuff like this from historians is incredibly tiresome and only widens the gap between the ivory tower and consumers of history. Established historian @MichaelNeiberg should know better.
Audiences go to theaters to be entertained. #1917Movie accomplishes that. It also has some educational value. Its greatest value is exposing Americans to #WWI via film which hasnt been done in a while.
To enjoy 1917 and learn something from it audiences do not need greater context, they don't need to be wary of overused tropes, and they certainly don't need historians to come out of nowhere and condemn the entire movie.
