The 1971 War was where the Indian Navy came into it's own and played a major part, unlike 1962, 1965 that were primarily land and air based. It was one of the finest hours of the Indian Navy to date. #NavyDay
The 1971 War, started on December 3, 1971, when the Pakistani air forced, launched Operation Chengiz Khan, a series of pre emptive attacks on the Indian air force bases in Pathankot, Agra, Ambala, that fortunately did not cause any major damage.

Much of the literature on 1971 War is preoccupied with the conflict between India & Pakistan, with the Cold War as backdrop, marginalizing the people of the land where it was fought. Indian accounts are predictably triumphal with regard to victory over Pakistan, 1/n
with the memoirs of a few officers peppered with self-promotion and derogation of others. Most of the key players did not publish memoirs. Pakistani discussion on 1971 are full of butter recriminations, mostly with regard to losing to India, 2/n
with deafening silence from the majority of those who had served in East Pakistan. The Bangladeshi refrain, by contrast, plays volubly and melodramatically on the theme of Pakistani 'villains' and Bengali 'victims' 3/n

1/3 I was sent the 1971 War Brochure (PDF) and one picture caught my attention . It was obvious the picture was cropped and the three chiefs are smiling at someone.. I found the pic on the net and its obvious why it was cropped. 🙄 #1971war Look we get it. you dont want to give .

Karachi port was Pak's most valuable asset & was heavily defended; attacking it was going to be very risky move. Admiral SM Nanda, Vice-Admiral SN Kohli, and Cmdr BB Yadav were the trio that masterminded and executed the most ambitious naval attack after WW2. (3/n)

The battle took place on the night of 4th December 1971 and continued on till 7th December.
Pakistan's objective was to march on from Longewala to Ramgarh and capture Jaisalmer. This would cut off the salient and put India on the defensive on the Western front. (2/n)

For this long march, the Pakistani tanks were carrying extra fuel tanks and with their massive superiority in numbers, weren't expecting strong resistance at Longewala.
The Longewala post sat on a dune offering good defensive positioning and was surrounded by barbed wires. (3/n)

The objective was to strike deep inside Chachro and create a chaos there. It was a strategically important stronghold for Pakistani Army. A hammer strike there would cut off supply line to Pak Army. To complete their mission,the forces travelled over 500 km !
There were two teams : Alpha and Charlie ( possibly 80 commandos in each ). Jeep and Jongas were equipped with MMGs.
