The request came through a group of academics who had made contact with a nearby prison. This prison was reserved for foreign nationals, i.e. people not holding citizenship of the country of detention. My task: teach the inmates to interpret better.
For a variety of legal reasons, these inmates had no right to an interpreter. Even when they had interpreters for official exchanges, 95% of exchanges inside the prison were not covered by this provision. Many inmates did not or only barely speak the official language.

Our first recommendation is not a microphone per se - but a good headset might be what you want. @adrechsel is very happy with the Sennheiser PC 8.2 (eposaudio.com/en/be/gaming/p…), @Goldsmith_Josh has been using the SC 60 for a while, also from Sennheiser (eposaudio.com/en/be/enterpri…).
Condenser mics like the Blue Yeti (or its smaller Yeti Nano version) get recommended a lot, but they have several drawbacks and require careful handling. They're also not exactly cheap.
Good morning! Yesterday we spoke about translation & interpreting graduates who often are not sufficiently prepared for a #freelance life. In your opinion, what steps are necessary to become a successful freelancer?

Solution? Both ears fully covered + 👉self-monitoring👈 (that is, listening both to “Floor” AND to your own voice through your headphones).

I really have a problem with this narrative that interpreters have been reluctant about #r1nt because of ideology. It sounds very dismissive of interpreters’ concerns regarding #r1nt. In my eyes those concerns are very legitimate and much more than ideology. A thread. 1/
I want to make clear from the start that I see a big distinction between #r1nt from home versus from a hub. There are many serious issues with the former while I see opportunities and some issues with the latter. /2

1. En una de mis primeras interpretaciones consecutivas en una rueda de prensa con abogados, estaba tan nervioso que no me di cuenta de que iba en zapatillas de andar por casa (dos cabezas del pato Lucas). Terminé con los zapatos de un cámara que no casaban con el traje.
2. Creo que mi primera consecutiva profesional fue el brindis del alcalde Canterbury y decían que el intérprete no podía salir en la foto. Terminé interpretando con un micro escondido tras una columna pero en mitad del comedor. Lógicamente, me veían todos los demás.
