#20in2020: The Gratitude Series- Blessing Odigbo- A Recommendation That Changed My Story

My phone rang. It was a female voice on the other end. After exchanging pleasantries, she told me someone recommended me very highly and she would like to have a chat with me.
She described her address- somewhere around Obasa Street in Bodija, Ibadan- and gave me an evening appointment.

I called my wife and told her. It was 2003 and I had been married for a few months.
I asked her to follow me for the appointment but she was to sit in the car and knock on the door if I didn't come out in 30minutes. I was really scared. I got there on schedule with my CV on a floppy diskette. There were no flash or thumb drives then.

#20in2020: The Greatest Salesman Who Ever Lived

I stumbled on this mail this morning.  I sent it on August 9, 2002- that was almost 18 years ago (see attached). GSM telephony just started and telecoms was the big thing then.
Everyone wanted to get employed by them. I recall there was such a rush then with many bankers jumping ship. I wanted to jump ship too and someone gave me the email of one of the bosses at one of the telecoms firm then.
I forwarded this mail to someone working at one of the firms then. I've had a good laugh all morning reading this mail. I started out in operations (back office) and I had just moved to sales. My experience was quite limited but I had a very ambitious outlook.

#20in2020: A Lesson About Failure

I want to share an experience I had during one of the many interviews I attended over the course of my career. I shared this piece exactly a year ago and I consider it apt for the moment.
The interview was somewhere around Palmgrove. I wore my best suit. It was circa 2006. I thought I was well prepared. I'd rehearsed and I had a script for different questions I expected to be asked. I prayed under my breath as I sat down with other candidates.
No one spoke to the other person. It was almost like the silence of the graveyard. So much tension and anxiety written on our faces.

When it was my turn, I knocked slightly and entered the room. I came face to face with a slightly built man who had a frown on his face.

This Time 20 Years Ago, I Was A Driver Salesman

I sat for an interview with hundreds of candidates. The interview was handled by a foremost fast moving consumer goods company. We initially thought we would be employed by the company.
It was when the final 8 candidates were selected that we were informed we would work for a distributor. Salary was 8k monthly. Scope of job? Driver salesman- you'll pick up goods from the warehouse, load into your bus, sell along an allocated route and meet specific daily targets
I needed a job badly. I was tired of sitting at home. So I picked up the offer. I couldn't drive well then but I wasn't going to fold my hands and do nothing. I wouldn't allow what I couldn't do well interfere with what I could do.
