There have been images circulating with larger and larger counts. Most communities are just beginning the journey to search around their schools and are taking time to engage with the survivors, Elders, and families to discuss how to proceed. This is a necessary step.
When you see numbers circulating, I encourage folks to go to the source of the information. Indigenous communities who have done this work and have chosen to share the results will have done so formally. Amplify what they are saying.

THREAD - It's time to talk again, because even after #215children, there's a problem, and it seems to be building.
Just in case you didn't see it. Near Brandon, MB, over 100 more children have been found on residential school grounds. This is, again, not surprising to me or my community because we know we have missing family. We have advocated for years for help to find them.
But even though it's not surprising - it still reignites trauma. And while that trauma is being experienced, we are subject to hateful genocide deniers and apologists, people asking what they can do, performative acts without substance, and political grandstanding.
The Canada you grew up in is not the Canada I grew up in.

We are all shocked and hurting right now. Many are imagining what we would do if they were our children who were taken away to school and never came home. It is a distinctly European, and maybe even North American settler thing to want to see something DONE, immediately. 3/23

These children had not been forgotten. People knew they were there. People witnessed this atrocity. There are other schools too, where the same is true. There's a whole section in the TRC report about it.
