My theory: when experts told Americans they couldn't eat eggs/bacon (fat/cholesterol) for breakfast, they turned to cereals which gradually got more sugary (sugar is addictive). If public had never been given that bad advice in the first place, we wouldn't be in this situation.
Many people who go back to eggs/bacon lose their taste for cereals, bc eggs etc are so filling and also far more nutritious (plus I think delicious, esp cooked in butter!) But still, official government advice is to eat 6+ servings of grains a day, incl. half as refined grains
