Trauma did NOT make you stronger.

It made you hyper-vigilant and scared of even calm and joyful experiences.

YOU make yourself stronger through the work of discerning between real and perceived threat.

Neuroception refers to our ability to distinguish whether situations or people are safe or dangerous.

When we’ve experienced trauma, our amygdala grows, and our ability to discern is lost.

As we heal our trauma we Rewire Our Brains and Recalibrate our Neuroception!

WHEN WILL WE LEARN?

The terrorist attacks against America comprise a horrible tragedy. But they shouldn't be a surprise.

(1 of 17) #NeverForget #PatriotDay #911Anniversary
It is well known that in war, the first casualty is truth – that during any war truth is forsaken for propaganda. But sanity was a prior casualty: it was the loss of sanity that led to war in the first place.

(2 of 17)
Our foreign policy has been insane for decades. It was only a matter of time until Americans would have to suffer personally for it. It is a terrible tragedy of life that the innocent so often have to suffer for the sins of the guilty.

What happened on 9/11/01 was terrible. None of the 3k individuals who died did anything to deserve their fate. It would be a miscarriage of history, however, to pretend that the United States was the victim. The US has caused serious death and destruction in the entire region

…I am so grateful he opened his heart to us at the cemetery where Betty is. He told me a part of her leg bone was found 3 blocks f/the World Trade Center.

Betty was the flight attendant on American Airlines flight 11 who made the 1st call about the chaos on board. #911Memorial
For those who haven’t heard the call, you’ll hear her bravery. Her calm. Her composure.

Harry told me later he can tell there is some fear in her voice but she had the determination to keep her passengers & team safe. #911Anniversary

“What really alarms me about the 'War on Terrorism' is the grammar. How do you wage war on an abstract noun? How is 'Terrorism' going to surrender? It's well known, in philological circles, that it's very hard for abstract nouns to surrender”#TerryJones

“What is meant by: ‘We mustn't give in to the terrorists’? We gave in to them the moment the first bombs fell on #Afghanistan

After the #911attack Terry Jones spoke out against the ‘War on Terror’

In the 2005 elections, he nearly ran against Tony #Blair thefreelibrary.com/The+man+who+ch…
I believe Terry could’ve won

The strategy was to run on a single issue &, if victorious, stand down & call an immediate by-election making the vote a referendum on Blair’s war

Tories & LibDems would likely have stood down

Sadly our candidate, Reg Keys, reneged on this strategy

Twenty years ago today, I was writing my doctoral dissertation in Beijing. I was extremely shocked when seeing the images of #911attacks.
Then I was even more shocked to see that many Chinese people were applauding this.

The Chinese Communist Party's incitement of hatred and nationalism is very powerful and effective.
Generally, those Chinese applauders were not supportive of terrorism, but were brainwashed by extreme anti-American sentiment.
Yet reflection and awakening are still possible. 2/3
Wu Gan said: "I applauded the 9/11 disaster, like other young Chinese, today I want to apologize to American ppl &ask for forgiveness for my ignorance back then." Wu became a human rights activist. He was charged w/ “incitement of subversion”, sentenced to 8 yrs &still jailed. 3/

Was around 8pm as we walked downtown.

Passing by South Street Seaport it looked like it was snowing from all the ash & debris from the towers. Ash was at least 2 inches thick on the ground 4 blocks.

We made our way past the Wall Street Bull which was also covered in Ash.

The September 11th attacks were nothing more or less than an attempt to murder as many people as possible, as quickly as possible and in the most gruesome and spectacular manner possible. No amount of quisling talk about "blowback" can obscure these facts. #911Anniversary
Thanks to Al Qaeda, billions of people all over the world had to contemplate what it must be to be forced to choose between burning or falling to death. Hitherto unimagined new vistas of horror were opened up, for good. #911Anniversary
Some might say the fact we haven't seen an attack on remotely that scale since proves that Islamic terrorism was always a paper tiger. But to my mind, this gives far too little credit to the security services who work to keep us safe. #911Anniversary

Personal news: Yesterday was my last OFFICIAL day as a paid employee at @NYCCouncil. A thread 🧵… Image
I’m deeply grateful to @ChaimDeutsch for giving me the opportunity as the Citywide Veterans Director to help #veterans & their families throughout #NYC! I learned so much during my time, including city policies and how the proverbial “sausage gets made.” Image
I also want to thank @tovadc, @maryscarf48, @JabaranAkram, the entire 48CD staff and the @NYCCouncil Veterans Committee staff for all their support, help and guidance! I appreciate you all!

I’m going to post this tonight because I have purposely planned a day away from screens tomorrow. It is the 20th anniversary of 9/11 down here in Australia and I am going to pack a picnic and spend it at the idyllic Rainbow Bay. Today has been a slow sink into the PTSD that 2/

To misquote Robert Sink, today is the day of days. 3,000 Americans died from terrorism 19 years ago today, & it is right to mourn them. Almost 200k Americans died from dereliction of duty. Mourn these Americans by voting Trump out in 53 days. #Vote #911anniversary
19 years after @RudyGiuliani reveled in an entire nation lauding his so-called leadership on 9/11 (I was even on the WTC pile, saw Hillary & Pataki more often than #RudyColludy), “America’s Mayor” is working in concert with Russian intelligence against our nation’s interests.
I know that next year’s #911anniversary will straight up fuck me up, & I’m already planning an outing on 11 Sept 2012 w/ my kids that celebrates life, not morbidly speaks to the Dan who once almost took his own life. By that time, insh’allah, I’ll still be free of 9/11 cancer 🤞🏽

“Is there an honorable non-violent means towards mourning and remembering who and what we loved?”

For #911Anniversary, I share this from poet June Jordan’s a keynote at Barnard in November 2001 about the attacks.
Keynote: Some of us did not die.

In examining how those who survived can best honour those killed, Jordan quotes Holocaust survivor Elly Gross: “I guess it was my destiny to live...To live means you owe something big to those whose lives are taken away from them” #911Anniversary
June Jordan urges resisting a “rally Around Caesar”and instead “rally around an emergency/militant reconstruction of a secular democracy consecrated to the equality of each and every living one of us.” #911Anniversary

As we reach another anniversary of 9/11, I'm proud to present you here with a war story that is both old and new. Let me explain. 1/

washingtonpost.com/world/national…
In 2010, I was a 29-year-old journalist in my third year of covering the military. I’d been at @MarineTimes since January 2008, and I hadn’t yet seen U.S. troops in combat.

That would change, abruptly and violently. 2/
@Marinetimes That spring, I set out to visit Marja, Afghanistan, which was then one of the major efforts for the U.S. military.

I traveled with Tom Brown, a veteran war photographer who also happens to be married to the great @cbudoffbrown. 3/

During your busy day today, I ask that everyone take a moment on the #911Anniversary to think of the first responders, those who lost their lives too soon, and the men and women that protect us every day.
It is still very hard to reflect back on that day. I was in DC & the group I was with was put on a bus back to Dallas. We passed American flags everywhere, in the middle of corn fields, on highways, on random cars, carried by hitchhikers.
It was truly unbelievable – out of a movie, but very real. Once in Dallas, I hugged my wife and children, thanked God I was home and an American. I found a lot on that trip. It has never left me, and never will. #NeverForget
