In the late 1700s, Friedrich Froebel was on track to be an architect, but became an educator instead. In pursuing this other career, Froebel arguably ended up having more influence on the world of architecture and design than any single architect. 99pi.org/episode/inheri… 🧵 1/9
Friedrich Froebel's lasting legacy is his invention of the kindergarten. If you’ve ever looked at a piece of abstract art or Modernist design and thought “my kindergartener could have made that,” well, that may be more true than you ever realized. 2/9
The German word "Kindergarten" cleverly encompassed two different ideas: kids would play in and learn from nature, but they would also themselves be nurtured and nourished “like plants in a garden.” 3/9

#99pi is always great, but this episode dedicated to greats in the architecture world who have died of COVID is extra good. And not depresssing podcast.99percentinvisible.org/feed/podcast/ plus good to hear @LangeAlexandra’s voice again
Like @PJVogt I am unable to watch horror movies. Not even the greats. So this series on him trying to watch some almost had me convinced I could do same/watch Exorcist. But then the next movie he’s doing is Nightmare on Elm Street. Nope. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rep…
My goal would only be to make it through the ones that are also great/important films. Things like Get Out, The Shining, Psycho, The Exorcist...

But otoh maybe sleep/sanity is more crucial.

(I have seen Silence of the Lambs. And Alien(s)—if those count.)

"He was convinced by Twitter personality @BurritoJustice to include the phoenix..." 😹

(also i bought one earlier today) sfchronicle.com/bayarea/articl…
I don't know why exactly, but rewatching @romanmars's Ted Talk version of #99pi on bad flags made me tear up. It's from The Before: Pre-pandemic, pre Trump. When we could linger on questions of vexillology.

Anyway, now's the time to overhaul the terrible SF flag. Brian's design isn't the only good one out there. @LondonBreed @HillaryRonen @AaronPeskin @MattHaneySF

Brian's redesign of the SF flag feels very poignant now. Still the phoenix rising from the ashes. But on fields of gold (grasslands/1849) and grey (fog).
And don't miss the many #99pi entries on what makes a good or bad flag: 99percentinvisible.org/episode/vexill…
And one just on the garbage fire that our official flag is. Please adopt Brian's design @LondonBreed 99percentinvisible.org/article/vexill…

Guys: the blame for lack of cabin/reclining sear related comfort is the airlines. Not your fellow passengers. Blaming them is like blaming the steerage passengers on the Titanic tmz.com/2020/02/14/del…
If the seat reclines, passengers have every right to recline it. Those discomfitted have a right to ask them not to but real question is airlines pushing shrinking legroom and comfort and whether we want legal limits on that.
More broadly, I wish that we ever heard from short people and others who are put into pain (airlines) or danger (cars) from seats that are designed for men 5'10" and up. This whole debate is mostly about their comfort. Nothing about others.

Better regulations could help all.

When you fall asleep listening to radio and podcasts, they can intrude on your dreams. Early this AM I had a dream where I was talking to Ted Danson (??), and he started crowing about @KALW, down to repeating 800-525-9197.

Anyway, I just upped my donation, made it sustaining.
@KALW One reason I love @kalw, aside from incubating #99pi, is the way they explain every single ballot initiative and air brief interviews with every municipal candidate for major office, no matter how wacky.*

*@BentIdeas doing god's work this morning. whew.
@KALW Also in my dream we were all eating while Danson was going off about @kalw and I spilled some salad on my scarf and tried to subtly scoop it into my mouth and got a mouth full of scarf too.

Which seems...not impossible.

Also that picture is supposed to be a McMansion and while it may be ridiculously big, there are rules about what makes a McMansion
Chief among them, as this #99pi episode lays out, is non sensical roof lines 99percentinvisible.org/episode/mcmans…

I have yet to see Green Book and this have no option about its merits but WILL EMPHATICALLY SAY, that this #99pi explaining the history is fab and bonus @thememorypalace is even better 99percentinvisible.org/episode/the-gr…
.@romanmars says that @thememorypalace is the best writer in radio and idk they might have to duke it out (and also @ScottCarrier57) but the last line of Nate’s piece made me cry. Heightened by listening to Roman’s first.
I know that’s two white guys weighing in on a key moment—passport, really—of Black history but if you listen I swear you will not be disappointed. Or you can come back and yell at us all here.

I came away smarter AND with two @slate T-shirt’s and the coveted Slate socks.
I mean just look at these. The MoJo merch needs to bring up our sock game. (Or, uh, get one.)
Now I'm going down a merch rabbit hole. Evidently New Yorker readers want embossed day planners in 8 colors? Honestly I wasn't aware people still used day diaries.
